Considering the route you're taking for unwavering stance, the blood magic node is reasonable temporarily at a certain point in the game. Blood magic gem on GS/HS costs you one gem slot each, but blood magic passive costs you hatred aura. The blood magic gem also pretty dramatically increases the hp cost of these skills.

I would rush to blood magic node and use it until you've broken 1k dps or so. In that spare gem slot, you can use LGoH. Pick up a 6-8% carnage heart for ~5 chaos when you're ready to refund blood magic passive and add the blood magic gem.

Once you've got an endgame 2h mace, I'm sure mana leech will be sufficient, freeing up an extra gem slot.

My mace/shield is lvl 55 using Ground Slam - Multistrike - Blood Magic - ECoMS and I'm rocking merciless in pretty terrible gear.

I had no problems with a BM gem, i had enough life regen and leech from warlords mark, but of course you can rush to BM since you are going to unwavering stance anyway so its just 1 respec point until you can run BM gem, only you will lose your dps aura

I didnt even use any uniques while leveling, i just slapped warlords mark in and leveled with that, easy peasy.

if i were to use a 5 link chest instead, would it still be viable? If yes, what would be the gem setup.

Of couse it would be, it took me about 1 and half months to get a 6link and it worked easily without it, look at the gem links section, they are in order of how many links you have, i am going to edit it though for 4l, 5l and 6l since its probably better that way
