before you do this remember the colours of the sockets cannot be changed afterwards. It's too bad to see many legacy Shavs losing like 20-50% of their value being in effect like a mirrored Shavs; usually everyone wants different colours for their needs...
I agree, I don't understand people using corrupted orbs on shav's, it already has an amazing implicit bonus, why change it?
Plus you lock the socket colors... GG useless item
Chests are one of the worst items to use a vaal orb on.
Best vaal orb is Amulets/Rings/Belts/Gems anything without sockets that you don't actually need the implicit bonus or colors
2nd best is shield, Weapon, since those have fewest sockets or usefull implicit mods
3rd is gloves, boots, helm since the socket colors can really be important on these, different for each person.
4th is chest since it has most sockets critical to any build
Only use Vaal orb on common uniques or rares that are a dime a dozen, never on one that is irreplaceable.
If you look at the pool of mods you can easily see that it's just not worth the risk on certain gear slots
Actually, chest ARENT that bad for vaal orbs, but you have to consider several things:
1. Only one gem color will be turned to white. So, if you want to make a GG item with all white sockets - recolor it to one color first.
And sometimes Vaal Orbs create 6-links with nice stats. So, why dont try it on a crappy chest with high Ilvl? You risk with nothing, but there is a chance to get a decent rare, 6-linked and with tons of offcolours.
I, personally, decided to use Vaal Orb on gloves first, as curse on hit mod seems very sweet.
plus that +1 to all max res on chest is pretty good.
It's good on a Kaoms. I don't know if I'd trade it for 10% spell damage and locked sockets on a 6L legacy shav.
Which is basically a lot of our points. Even if you get a "PERFECT" corruption mod on a legacy shav, it's still arguably worse than before. Actually this is not arguable. It IS worse than before.
The only /strictly positive/ outcome I can think of is if it rolled 3+ white sockets all on the blue colors. Even then it may rule out some socket combinations unless you actually got 4+

Is that confirmed it changes all of 1 color to white? I just figured it went through each socket with a small % chance to turn white which is why you don't generally see more than 2 white sockets (except that 1 soul taker I think it was with all 3 linked white).
Also, Have we seen anything other than a Kaoms turn to a 6link rare? Pretty sure I haven't. Figured GGG thought the risk was heavy enough they gave a good chance to roll 6link on that.
All speculation and guessing for me.
I need to play my standard character and get some vaal orbs. Got a couple items I could toss em at.
Question to those who have done it. When corrupting gems, is there a way to tell what it does if you use it on a level 1 gem(aside from adding quality)? I see so many corrupted empower etc but they're level 1... Can people tell if they're duds, or if they have lvl4 max possible?
The only known for me effect of Vaal Orbs on gems are:
Increasing level (+1)
Decreasing level (-1)
Increasing Quality (can even make Q23% from 0)
Decreasing Quality (random value)
Turning normal gem into Vaal gem.
level 4 empower IS possible!
He asked if there is a way to know if your empower can get to level 4 without having to test in only on max level.
A vaal orb can increase the level of a lvl 1 gem to lvl 2? If so does it mean your gem can get to lvl 21?

Yes, level 21 on a normal gem (level 4 for empower/enlighten/enhance) is possible with Vaal orbs. There is actually a couple linked in this thread. I was asking as you point out if there is any way to tell if you achieved the "+1 max level" corrupt role without actually maxing the gem though. The level 3 max gems would sure take a HUGE amount of time to test. Wish there was a way to use Enlighten on supports... Heh

Wait.
So you are wondering if when you use a Vaal Orb on say, a level 1 gem, and it goes to level 2, that you would be able to level it to 21 because you "increased it's max level?"
No. If you want a level 21 gem you are going to have to corrupt a level 20 gem. Etc.
