Add a link where one isn't normally possible and/or remove one too.

With all the drawbacks, i believe it may become overkill
Current drawbacks:
-Cannot mirror a mirror worthy item
-Cannot exalt/chaos an item anymore.
-Cannot modify sockets colors. (supposed you did not get full white sockets)
-Cannot enjoy eternaling and messing with an item.

At least you can max link an item before corrupting it, imagine if you lose a link or more?

I am attraced by the: "Add an extra link" but realisticaly there should be a chance for a 4S searing touch to get 6S6L on corruption.

Chance to get max perfect colors => Check.
Chance to get max links => ?

Yeah, I mean there's so many ways to expand the corruption idea. Keeping it all in one orb is almost limiting. I liked the speculative "vaal orbs corrupt other orbs" idea because it would have given both more control and interesting potential risk versus reward to players.

Want to use a corrupted chromatic to get white sockets? Well, there's a risk you get black sockets that only accept white gems, or you just mix up the regular RGB colors. Lots of design space here.

Random thought, corrupted gems have a chance to become white or black. Stuff like that.

Corrupting orbs sounds great. It might come up with next expansion ;)
I am pretty sure next expansion eternal orb for corruption will be made aswell.

8 portal gems, that power, such feat, much amaze.

So....are we going to ignore what looks like an updated unique art kaoms with a 5 link in the News post?
