Kripp-Inspired DW Lightning Strike Build => need feedback pls kthx <3
BACKGROUND
Ok guys, I really love Kripp's lightning strike ranger build (see below), however there are a couple of major reasons why I won't consider it for my first character in OB: 1) I don't want to play a female character (yeah yeah, so sue me hehe) 2) It feels wrong to outright copy an ENTIRE build without adding anything even mildly your own Kripp's 2H LS Ranger: My Dual Wield Duelist Variation: I tried to keep it as close to Kripp's original 2h build so I can be reasonably sure that the build is half decent. I think it's very close in terms of both dps AND survivability. Here's the comparison of 2H vs DW passives in a nutshell... PASSIVE DIFFERENCES
Spoiler
Pros:
+13% more attack speed +1% more life regeneration +1 frenzy charge +18% frenzy charge duration +15% block chance from dual wielding (not sure if 2H has a comparable implicit +block bonus?) Cons: -8% evasion/armor (although this may not be accurate as I'm not sure how nodes which have BOTH evasion and armor interact with Iron Reflexes...) -21% physical damage -20% accuracy -20% crit multi Sum: The 2h build seems MARGINALLY more efficient, although I think that in future levels my build has more potential than Kripp's as he has more-or-less exhausted all the attractive nodes that are directly accessible, whereas I have not. For example, I can take Dervish in the Duelist area for +block and +dmg. Otherwise I can go with nodes which Kripp originally chose like the Cruel Blade sword dmg nodes just above blood magic or the 3 life nodes under Savant and Might. OTHER DIFFERENCES
Spoiler
- Dual Wield means that I will only have access to 1 5/6 slot item on my chest (no shield or 2h wep)! As far as I can tell, this is the most significant drawback for my build as it will probably mean that I need to give up faster attack on either my AoE or single target attack :(((((((((( One way or another, this implies a loss in overall DPS. In part to compensate for this...
- I plan to use blood rage to boost life leach and attackspeed. This was an easy decision to make as the frenzy charge nodes were the most convenient way to get to the bottom of the passive tree from the Duelist area. Having said this, i think that blood rage also synergizes well with the core build / all-in playstyle in its own right. CONCLUSION
Spoiler
As said at the start, I think this build is very comparable to Kripparian's 2H build, which he has proven to be incredibly effective. There are some minor sacrifices made for the sake of aesthetics (Duelist) and style (dual wield + blood rage), and while the 1h+shield ranger approach is probably the most optimal lightning strike I've come across, I would argue that my dual wield build will be the most fun to play!
Please let me know what you think: - Did I make any mistakes with the passives? - Is the build less viable than I think it is? etc etc... Thanks in advance for your much-needed feedback and GLHF ! ! ! Last edited by Skol#1998 on Jan 13, 2013, 8:05:45 AM

One thing i think you should note is that LS with dual wield switches weapons every attack, so you might do less damage anyways I do not know. Dual wielding does give you 15% attack speed and 15% block automatically i believe. Hopefully that helps. The build sounds like a lot of fun though!

" Yeah that's true, 1H weps will tend to do less damage than 2H ones... This is one major problem that I have with the game's mechanics: there just doesn't seem to be any real justification for going dual wield! 1) 2h Weapon will provide 5-6 link AND probably more base dps even without the extra socket 2) 1h + Shield will provide more survivability I guess DW's passive attackspeed and block mean that GGG intended dual wield to be a kind of middle ground between survivability and dps? DW also means you get twice the weapon stats, but anyways i think those weapon stats will only 'proc' for each alternate swing... e.g. elemental damage on the mainhand weapon won't proc when it is the offhand's turn to swing, correct? Maybe dual strike would be a better single-target skill for this build, will have to see come open beta! Maybe the passive +block nodes for dual wield are more valuable than i think they are? Not sure how important it will be for me to block physical attacks as most of the troublesome damage late game seems to be elemental... Anyone else have any more insight into possible advantages of dual wield over 2h/1h+shield?
DW with Lightning Strike is not a good build imo since LS gets no real bonus from DW and only attacks with one weapon. 1 handed sword do about 40% less base dps then 2 handed so your dmg will not be even close to the same. You also need to use alot more life to do the same dmg with DW and you lose the 5/6 link, its not even close to as good as 2 handed.
DW gets block chance but 1H+shield still seems alot better for survivability. IGN: eLdiLdoRadO

" is it REALLY 40% less base dps for 1h than 2h swords? oh man your comments are so painful takeme! thanks for your feedback all the same, very useful :) seems like there really is no saving grace for dual wield after all... seriously, someone please give me an example of a build which actually benefits from dual wield (aside from cleave and dualstrike, which are EXTREMELY limiting due to their range). i hope GGG does something about this :
I believe the lack of really cool and viable dual wield builds will stop once a new set of skills focused on dual wielding is released. I am pretty sure that GGG has said that some new skills are in the works.

you should post what skills to use/not use and such and explain why its good and bad

if you want a dual wield build you can always try using cleave and dual strike. They aren't for everyone, and a lot of people don't like those skills, but I find them to be fun especially if you put increased aoe on cleave (and not conc effect!). It's what i plan to plan on release.

" All the 1 handed weapons do 63 dps at max level, and all the 2 handed weapons do 104, so they do 40% less dps, or you could say the 2 handers do 65% more dps. " He was using Increased Critical Damage, and Faster Attacks, i don't remember the last one, but what you should use is... -Weapon Elemental Damage -Faster Attacks -Increased Critical Damage -Added Fire Damage Pretty much in that order of importance. You want to use one of two setups for the AoE gem. -Lightning Strike + Pierce + LMP + Life Leech -Quality Lightning Strike + LMP + Faster Attacks + Life Leech Only use the first one if you can't get a Quality LS.
