cant use a jewelers orb on item?

Anyone know why I can't use a jewelers orb on a Searing Touch? I got it at level 14 on a new alt, it has 2 linked sockets. If its not possible to use them then thats just messed up. I have 2 of them on standard and I was able to use them on those so what gives?

Are you asking why you can't get more than 3 sockets? Because that would be because it's only item level 14.

Item level is too low. 3 sockets require ilvl 15 (I believe), 4 sockets ilvl 28, 5 is ilvl 35, and 6 is ilvl 50+.

ok so why is this searing touch IL 14 and the other 2 i have IL 55? A 2 socket searing touch is retarded. Makes no sense that it can have a max of 2 sockets while my others have 4-5

Dumb mechanic. I assume its same chance to drop it regardless of monster level. So you can buy any unique and get ripped off when you try to get 5-6 links out of it youll be stuck with 2-3. Both my previous searing touch's dropped in cruel so monster wasnt 55

It's not a dump mechanic, it's a sensible mechanic. Just like item prefixes and suffixes are based on the item's level, ie what monster dropped it, so are item sockets. It is also logical to the progression of the game where you start weak and become stronger. Five links in an item is 'stronger' than having two links just as being level 35 is 'stronger' than being level 14.


If you wish to know the item level of any item you can do this.

1. Open your inventory.
2. Left click the item.
3. Press 'enter' to open chat.
4. Type "/itemlevel" and press enter (don't type the quotation marks)

Also, if you hold the alt key while hovering over an item in the trade window it'll show the item level. So you can't get scammed into buying a low ilvl item.

Because a jewelers orb won't work on an item that already has the maximum number of sockets it can get. A one handed weapon can only get 3 sockets max. Consider yourself lucky. You used to just waste jewelers orbs with no possibility of improvement. Now the game won't let you.
