March 21 Updates: Flask System Dev Diary/Screenshot of the Week

Hi guys,

This week's dev diary discusses our Flask System. There's also a Screenshot of the Week showing a Unique Flask. This is one of the many ways we are trying to push itemisation on different gameplay systems.

We've changed the website to say that the beta starts in "mid 2011" rather than "early 2011". At this stage we're estimating that we'll add the first waves of registered users to the Closed Beta in approximately early August.

As you know, forum members are being added to the Alpha sporadically. The next Alpha update (0.8.0) is scheduled for mid-April.

Very cool pot system. Its pretty much diablo 3s health orb system but you can store the health orbs in a bottle to use when you actualy need it. I actually couldn't think of a better way to solve pot spamming while keeping a fluid combat health/mana regen system. Very cool guys.

Also mods on your pots to further customize your characters play style.Thats just bad ass.

Good work.

Sucks about the delayed game. However I saw this coming and in the end this will lead to a more fun first experience to the beta testers. Would rather delays then a Age of Conan style unfinished release. Riddled with missing content and bugs.

im always pleasantly surprised how you guys bend ideas and move them forward in interesting ways.

will players be able to get hold of 5 flasks the first thing they do?...
scratch that...why not.
i can see some serious flask trading going on.

also, nice to see a heads up on the beta date.
im currently playing dins curse while i wait.

my trainwreck of a brain derailed a bit while reading.

red flask...filled with red substance...fill it up when you kill monsters.
it must BE BLOOD....DRINK THE BLOOD OF YOUR ENEMIES!
but speaking of bodily fluids....
what is the blue stuff...brain juice?
Very interesting read. The particular mechanics of the flask system were one of the more speculated things on the forums.

I am very interested to see how this will effect both PvE and PvP. For me i would want as much life recovery as possible in PvE, but in PvP perhaps i would want something that simply healed less, but healed it faster. The foresee the flasks being a pretty integral part of the game in addition to regular equipment.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.
Quite a refreshing and innovative approach you got there, GGG. I salute you.

Concerning healing time from charges, I assume they are Healing Over Time (HoT) effect - with not being able to drink another untill HoT effect (charge) expires? Because pot spam from D2:LoD wasn't fun in PvP.

P.S.: Add some flavor text on unique flasks, too.

'I believe you find life such a problem because you think there are the good people and the bad people. You're wrong, of course. There are, always and only, the bad people, but some of them are on opposite sides.'
thank you chris for the update and dev. diary! i really love the flask system its very well made so far! furthermore the unique/enchanted flasks are a great way to customize your chars.

Thanks :)

I believe that the healing buffs from the flasks queue up one after another.

In PvP, players only have one set of flask charges (those in their belt), so if they waste them fast then they'll be beaten by players who manage their resources better.

Some uniques have flavour text (the one we showed a few weeks ago is an example). The one we showed today is pretty experimental so we haven't written flavour text for it yet.

"so if they waste them fast then they'll be beaten by players who manage their resources better."

So if I go against person whos better than me because they know how to use potion. the mean they win?

thats unethical. Im so disapoint in GGG.this is just unfair.

I imagine the flasks with instant recovery will be the most desirable among players.

Kind of hard to make a judgment like that given that I haven't played the game yet, just taking a shot in the dark.
I't could be best potion system in h'n's games, including Diablo III system.
