" By default shrines provide some sort of buff to nearby enemy monsters. If you run up and touch the shrine then you temporarily steal that buff for yourself. Shrines cannot be destroyed. It's like a mashup of shrines from D2 and enemy totems from Ancient Pyramid. Forum Sheriff

" I understand what they do in terms of being a buff/debuff and risk/reward kind of deal. I'm just wondering what exactly is the deciding factor for the shrine being unavailable to the player. Chris said in the Gamespot interview that you had the choice to either kamikaze into the shrine for its bonus or hang back and kill the monsters. If you could just kill the monsters and still get the shrine afterward, it would be obvious to just do that since it lasts plenty long that you can just utilize the bonus for the next pack(s) you run into. There has to be some kind of catch that actually makes it a risk/reward mechanic or it'll just be a braindead temporary buff. IGN: Smegmazoid
