My computer crashes randomly during PoE / not an overheating problem

Hi, ever since the 11.4 patch my computer restarts whenever i go into an area with hostile creatures. I can leave it idling in town or in the eternal lab without problems.

It started around time patch 0.11.4 was deployed, can't say for certain because i didn't play much during the week before and the week after the patch. At first i thought it was a heating issue because my computer is quite old. However, HWmonitor read 45ish °C on my CPU cores and around 75°C on my GPU. I vacuumed my CPU and GPU fans and shaved the temps down to 40°C CPU and 60-70°C GPU (the values were taken while playing PoE,around a minute before the crash). I also tested my computer with other games, played Skyrim, Burnout paradise, Mirror's edge(yay humble bundle!) and some Saint's row III,and didn't come across any problems.I've played the game since around January this year, and never had any issues.

I also tested the --softwareaudio // --nosound tip and it didn't help

Comp.Specs:

Intel Core 2 quad Q8200
4 GB RAM
AMD Radeon 4870 with 1gb ram
Win 7 64bit
IGN: Dimetric, Penkala, Nazeer
UPDATE: it seems i only disconnect while doing docks or lunaris temple, did a few catacombs and a few fellshrine runs and everything was fine.
IGN: Dimetric, Penkala, Nazeer

Hey there,

Can you please run a Pack Check to ensure the game is installed correctly?

A guide for doing this can be found here:
https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/18531

Also, can you please post up a DxDiag report?
If you need instructions for this, they can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Poq-BorOSHU
This is the dxdiag log, and i'm running packet checker at the moment. Will update with that info.

These are the temperature readings from HWmonitor, around 2-3 minutes after logging in game and idling in town.

These are the temperatures right before a crash/restart, so it definitely shouldn't be an overheating problem.

UPDATE:
I'm fairly certain the problem isn't hardware/my particular install related. I've ran multiple stress tests for my CPU and GPU (furmark and intelburntest) without any problems (i actually ran FurMark in burn mode for 45 minutes), i've done a clean install of PoE and it still happens regularly. I've also noticed i crash in A3 only. I can provide screenshots of stress tests if necessary. Hope you resolve this in future patches.

Running tests like that for 45min and not having issues is good, but it doesn't prove there isn't an issue with the hardware.

If you can run a program like Prime95 for a 24 hour period without any issues, then it would be a good indication that the hardware is fine.

The fact that you had clogged heatsinks and the temperatures of your hardware dropped, means that they've been operating at higher than normal temps for quite some time, and this can lead to damage.

Based on what you've done, I'm not sure what else to suggest.
You can try using the latest as well as older versions of your graphics drivers to see if it is a driver conflict issue.

Have you tried the -gc 2 command at all?

Henry may be right. I ran with a Radeon 4870 for many years and all games worked perfectly. Then one day while playing a new title a few years ago I got severe artifacts after playing the game for awhile and the gpu got heated up more than any other game. Windows XP ran fine and other games were ok. That 1 game would cause artifacts and if I continued would eventually crash and lock up Windows and I'd have to do a hard reset.

So I did my research and decided that the MSI cooler called Twin Fozr kept the GPU temps low without making any high fan noise. 2 years ago I bought an MSI Hawk 6870 1GB with the Twin Fozr III cooler and could then play the title that caused artifacts and crashed the R4870 with zero problems. The Twin Frozr III cooler is a fantastic cooler and I never hear its fans even while playing Far Cry or any other title that stresses the GPU. As for PoE, I have everything maxed out on my 24" 1920 x 1080 monitor and the video is flawless. PoE doesn't need a super gpu and the 6870 works great. I routinely see the MSI R6870 with the Twin Frozr II and Twin Froxr III (the III has even better cooling than the II) being sold on eBay for under $100 or if you can afford it get the R7850 MSI model.
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

The question is, why can PoE so easily overheat any PC, even the ones that can stand other performance hungry stress tests without any issues? What does PoE actualy do to tortue PC's that much? Because I can't see it.

The problem is not the GPU temperature , i'm monitoring it and it never exceeds 70-75°C, which is fine.

Also, i only get problems while playing A3 , i've been leveling a char this weekend to check if i'll get problems during the playthrough and i haven't had a single crash up to normal Vaal(4ish hours into the game), even while running dual PoE clients.
Usually, i crash a minute after i step into merc docks, catacombs or lunaris on my leveled chars. It's really wierd, actually, and i can't really tell why it happens, as i've been playing poe on this gear for almost a year now without any problems.

also tried the -gc2 , didn't help. :/
