Hi, I just started this build not too long ago, and I have to say that I am enjoying it as a new player. I managed to buy all the uniques that you recommended in the early going, and my witch is currently at level 29. It was going great, but I feel now that my zombies die pretty quickly in act 3 than they did before. Any tips? I have my zombies linked to minion damage and melee splash (looking to get multistrike soon), but it's hard to find any 4 links at my current level and limited currency. I also use storm call as my damage spell while my zombies and spectres attack. How did you guys manage to grind until you got your 4 links?
We followed the 'Power Leveling' guide then transitioned to Summoner around level 68... As suggested in the first post.

Well, how about any tips from those who didn't power level? Seeing as I can't do that as a new player...

As stated in first post is is not viable to level up as a summoner. Have to use other skills and spec with life build until you can equip level 20 raise zombie gems... at level 68.

How then exactly is this a "newbie friendly" build then? There are some comments from people who have stated that they started off as a low level summoner, and that it wasn't that bad at all. I'm specifically asking those who have gone down the same path and had success for some advice and tips.

This is not true, I started with this build, an direct with CI build (too lazy to respec). Now I'm at level 78 and with zombie gem at level 17.
It's possible, just take more time and need more attention than others power level builds.

I follow this guide, and didn't use the power leveling method. EK, RZ, and RS+spell totem, following the life build, now I am lvl 44 at ACT 2 cruel and didn't die a single once.
It is amazing that I ever try other builds but no other char can stay alive for so long! (My network is very bad, terrible lag and frozen screen when attacked by many monsters). Just RZ and RS, and stay behind spamming EK, even in boss fight you can use RS to keep distance. Slowly but very safe!
You can enjoy your game in your own way. I am very excited to find out how she will go at end game.

Forgive me for being a bit unclear, as I was merely just trying to prove a point to the comment above mine that stated that starting off as a summoner isn't viable. These are exactly the comments I was referring to from people who have started off as a low level summoner and had success. I really appreciate all the work that went into your guide so I want to thank you for sharing.

This is actually very helpful. I've tried using EK but I find that it is too slow. Do you link it with faster casting to help mow through mobs? I've been using storm call, and it's been working fine until lately and it doesn't do much against lightning resist mobs, especially piety.
