@Qarl - Clarifying GGG's balancing goals

Hi, I will take some time to discuss balance and game design as a response to this thread. If it gets very large, it may be posted as a separate post. If that is the case then I will post a link to that here. It will take some time to give a full response, and I have other things to do as well. I am not planning to answer each question individually especially as some seem to be formulated as traps (for example, are you balancing for early, middle or late game (where any answer suggests we are ignoring the other two), or as attacks (ones formulated along the lines of are you planning, or just making stuff up and not testing it). Good questions. I like that they want balance so everyone doesn't play the same build but I wish they would take time to calculate and test things instead of seemingly changing things up every release based on complaints. The CI vs Life thing for example: CI in CB gave 50% more ES and ES on gear back then had insane mods
In OB the 50% more was removed and the mods were toned down. Later the nodes after CI were added because CI was considered weak. Good questions, but I had to stop reading them when you used "viable". Horrible word. Means different things to different people, since people have differing goals.

Wow Qarl came out of hiding. I kept meaning to ask you this stuff earlier but that whispering in my ear "shut the fuck up, don't waste his time" shit overtook me again.
First selfish, what is your opinion of Slurm's proposed ideas for infused shield? Next general, what exactly is the goal/end balanced (if you will) of CI? Right now there seems to be a divide between OB and CB. OB people seem to want CI to function similar to life while CB people want it to function more like it did before GR (general categories people, don't need individuals coming out to say they don't fit that group, just seeking answers). The problems I see with CI atm is early/mid game (without great luck) life always beats CI and endgame CI always beats life. Changing the numbers can shift this but one will always dominate the other. If we had an idea of what you guys hoped to achieve we could give detailed feedback related to how this actually works out. If I may suggest making it a part of the Dev Manifesto instead of this thread as it is sure to get buried in no time. I apologise for some of the loaded questions, I know some of them are of the "will you stop beating your wife" variety but I am little frustrated with the game atm, let's say I am struggling to see the direction you are taking as of late & I am just looking for a little reassurance but pls try to understand it all stems from love for the game. I never expected you to address every question either, if it results in Dev post with a broad outline of the balance intentions heading towards release I will be more than satisfied. There is too much speculation about what this game is & what it isn't on the forums, it will be good for us all to get some clarity. |

#1 Do you feel that 4 links are a basic amount and should be easy to attain.
#2 Do you realize that players are stacking high amounts of life or energy shield because regen is a more sound defense then actual defense. #3 Why is energy shield able to be used as life. Life on armor can hit 109 where as energy shield on an armor can hit 900+. Why would you think that making these two comparable could ever be balanced? Casters need high energy shield to withstand large damage when it is unavoidable, Melee uses Armor and leech to mitigate damage. Also, there isn't an aura that increases your maximum life like discipline therefore mana users have an easier time stacking es, Not to mention 10% more es from 100 int nodes where as 100 str is equal to 200 life is it? Why would you cross two things that are completely different together, It's like breeding an elephant with a trout.(Elephants are tanky, Trouts are fast and obviously there are big size differences.) #4 why isn't there a + based armor aura, I'm tired of taking iron reflexes because I need the additional armor from grace, That additional armor is needed and welcomed please do not "nerf" this. In closing I would like to tell you that I do not believe a middle ground can ever be compromised between two very different things like armor and evasion or life and energy shield. They are unique and need to be equally good but different. I'm tired of reading about nerfs I really thought GGG was better then this, Your game is balanced your rng is not. Decent items are very hard to come by and we use little things like iron reflexes and grace to make up for the fact that we cannot find a chest piece with high armor, life, good resist. chaos resist. I also want to make sure you understand that only totem builds and summoners can afford to stack iir and iiq. The rest of us are trying to survive and get enough damage to be able to kill things without getting bored from it. |

" Sounds like you've never played an energy shield based character if you can't see it is very different from life (yes of course there is some similarity but a char with mitigation and life is completely different then a char with no mitigation and ES). If anything change vaal pact to make it so you cannot regen ES, because Vaal Pact + Ghost Reaver is the only thing that might be considered OP IMO. |
