That's what people mean when they say snapshotting, which is what is getting you confused. When you're using a totem, simply pretend at all times it's as if you are casting the spell with your current spell effecting stats in play.
As for the other question someone asked, totems are not immune to status effects. You can see this clearly by using freeze on a totem, it will indeed freeze, chill, burn, get shocked, and even get stunned or knocked back. IGN = Dellusions_Duelist
