(Aug 11) One-hour Cut-throat event

Duration: One hour
Hardcore: No
Start time: 12noon NZ time, Saturday Aug 11 (5pm Friday Pacific Time)

There will be no prizes for this event. It's mostly a test and we want to get feedback of how it feels without prizes biasing behaviour.

Note that we have fixed some stability problems since last time. We expect it to go quite a lot smoother :-)

Cut-throat Rules are:
  • This is a separate short-duration league that has its own stash (as usual). At the end of the event, characters and stashed items will be moved to Default.
  • There's a PvP damage multiplier on levels below 15 because players start with a lot more life than they do damage. This multiplier will be adjusted substantially based on feedback from this event and others.
  • Players are hostile by default to players who are not in their party.
  • You can ctrl+click on the entrance to an area to use the Instance Management screen to manually enter any other player's instance of an area.
  • The maximum party size is still 6.
  • Cut-throat instances can hold a maximum of 12 players. This means that a full party is not safe because another party can invade them.
  • This test is not a hardcore league. When you die, you lose the normal experience penalty for your difficulty plus 30% of your current level. You also drop all inventory and equipped items. Your flasks, skill gems (even ones in your inventory) and quest items are not dropped.
  • If you were killed by another player, your lost experience is split among their party.
  • If you attempt to abruptly leave the game in a non-town instance, you have to wait 5 seconds and are unable to move or use flasks.
  • The grace period of invulnerability upon entering an area is 10 seconds. This should start once the player is mostly done loading.
  • Non-partied players only show up on the map if they're nearby.
  • There are no notifications for players joining or leaving areas.
  • Portals cannot be used until they have been up for five seconds.

In addition, the standard league rules apply, where applicable.

Were kill/death stats ever posted for the last cut-throat event one week ago?

Nope. They're difficult to calculate and we're still working on a nice automated ladder for those values.

I really think a Cutthroat instance should hold more than 12 people max. I can understand if it's a hardware / game engine limitation but if it's something you can make bigger, please do so.

Some of the best back in the Diablo 2 days was guild versus guild fights, but they were very limited since the game could only hold 8 people in one game. 12 is a tad bit better but a lot of guilds are going to have more than 12 people, how awesome would big 20 vs 20 fights be? (or better).

Plus it will help a little with griefing, obviously the whole idea of Cuttthroat is there are no rules really but if the cap is 12, that doesn't stop a guild from forming one party of 6 people, then bringing in like another 2 or 3 people that are not in the party, and gang up on the 1 or 2 other people in that instance. Open pvp is one thing, but maybe it's just me when I hunt down others to kill them I at least want them to have a sporting chance, otherwise killing someone just doesn't feel "legit".
May I suggest to have a 10 minutes preparation time (in which pvp isn't enabled), similar to how diablo 2 did with it's minimal level requirement.

Not necessarily for this event but maybe in the future.

It would also be interesting to have team based cut-throat and solo based ones (impossible to party up in those).

It would be good (for me, yes selfish me) to switch the time of the two different events every week so that I can play in them both once a fortnight. The HC race starts at 630am for me sunday morning.... as much as I like POE..... I like sleep better :P :)
Super exciting news! While my primary interest isn't hardcore pvp, i can't wait to see what will be done here. The more rulesets, the more opportunities for fun and varied gameplay!
