the race league works fine for me (apart from the tab sorting). i'd be checking your version if it's not.

Figured it out, probably should have tried this much sooner, but uninstalling chrome and re-installing worked.

Trying to get the helper to work however, it gets stuck at Loading.. The java console shows this error:

I guess if you have some weird file permission problem you could try uninstalling and reinstalling the plugin. I think that will delete the db completely, which might fix it as the full refresh only empties it.

Reinstalling chrome and helper completely helped. It works as intended now.

I tried uninstalling the plugin, at least I think I did. i clicked the trash icon next to it in the plug ins page and reinstalling. Didn't work. I thought it was odd that reinstalling chrome worked, but I couldn't think of anything else to do.

very odd. deleting it like that kills everything related to the plugin including the db, so when you reinstall it's like a fresh install. sounds a bit like something was broken in chrome itself. who knows perhaps there was a bug that's been fixed already.
