Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Killing enemies alone is fine but it’s the loot that makes it really interesting. The problem is that you’re telling me that some players shouldn’t get effectively rewarded, as if they didn’t do anything to help in the fight.

The issue of people not helping is fixed with a vote-kick option. So, where’s the argument that some people in a co-op game just shouldn’t get effective rewards, because they weren’t paying attention?

Also, experience isn’t really an effective reward; as the player gets less and less of it the higher level the player is, this it’s a smaller reward each level.

Well then you trade items or just get given the item by the dude who picked it up. If you really need it of coarse.

Rustychops, you have to understand, strangers will not always be that nice. Also, if you never get good loot, then you’ll never be able to trade for anything worthwhile.

Loot, I would say, is a major reason why a game like this is even played.

Sure, you could weave loot grabbing into an effective battle strategy, but it will never be as effective as someone who can put their full attention into a fight. And for people that do put their full attention into a fight, you’re saying they should be punished. Why is that?

Edit:

You know, that’s actually the biggest issue I have with all this. It’s been stated that the player should be “paying attention” in order to get loot, yet that concept lacks a caveat.

It assumes the player will be unengaged in combat. Or even if it assumes the player will be in combat, why should the player that’s contributing to killing enemies and effective strategy be penalized for doing so?

It’s totally backwards. Every player contributing should be rewarded with loot. Players not contributing should be kicked. Simple and easy.

... Do you party with dodgy guys down alley ways or something.

Looting is part of the combat. clicking and pressing maby q w e r isn't exactly distracting. Like if you had looting in say a FPS this would be a different matter.

Rustychops, in a completely anonymous environment, no one knows who they're partying with unless it's someone on their friends list.

Also, looting is more so part of phase 3, where the players check their loot to see if they want to keep it.

With a FFA system, or even badly implemented time system, the person contributing the least to killing enemies could be the person rewarded the most, simply because he’s ‘paying attention.’

Then kick him from your party and add him to your black-list.

Grabbing loot is part of the gameplay. If some guys doing the most damage and grabs the loot first because hes got fast reactions that's still unfair? If hes good at the game hes going to be doing the most damage obviously. If hes also good at the game hes going to used to the "quick grab the loot before some other noob does" system.

Black-listing every other stranger isn’t really an effective solution; it’s not even a great way to play a game.

Also, I already said that grabbing loot and killing enemies effectively is possible, but it’s not nearly as effective as simply killing enemies. So, people who are being most effective at killing enemies must be punished for not paying attention to loot?

It’s more likely that the ‘noob’ paying more attention to the loot will likely get more rewards then those paying more attention to killing enemies.

u only know to kick him after he took the loot already.

dont u see why mixing Combat and looting into the same time doesnt work in 90% of ur partys with strangers?
FFA or other bad allocated loot systems only promotes solo play.

Playing with strangers is always a tricky situation
U know, he might say he needs something u just looted, but can u be sure? He might just wants to take it to trade it later.
Or u might need it urself for another character, but can he be sure about that?

the game should help to avoid these conflicts as good as possible.(usually they aint fun, unless ur the griefer that enjoys the whinning of others)
FFA or bad timed solutions only support one kind of gamers, those who grief, steal etc.
Good party behaivor can be done with all systems, but only the bad ones support griefing and stealing like FFA does.
Wait a minute. The most engaged person in any battle is going to be the tank. But a couple of pages back you were telling me that tanks had an unfair advantage in grabbing loot. So are tanks at an advantage or a disadvantage by your logic? I'm confused.

I still dont see why this guy thats doing nothing is still in your group. If hes been there for 1 minute and doing jack all just kick him.

Simple solution of not knowing if you should give it to them or not. I need it for another charecter! "Eat a dick". Hey I need that item to help out my fireballs. The +32% fire damage would be amazing. You saw them using fireballs for the last 20 mins "sure here you go""Do you have anything for me though?". If your nice to him he will probably be nice to you.

If he lies and says no even though he has something you could use then hes probably me.
