Looting -- The official thread for discussing the loot system. Updated 18th March, 2013.

Darn this is a long thread.
I feel I really need to post something here to partake in it.
And yes, I admit I only read a few pages.

To say something about the topic:
I play solo because the loot-whoring is just annoying.
I'm not about to charge into the fray with a fragile caster just get an item quickly, when I would have all the time in the world if I didn't play with those *censored*.
I have to admit I'm not a specifically social player, in any case;
I'm not sure instanced loot would make me party any more.

Global chat: Mechanics for A work one way, B for another, C for a third but also with A, B uses C but not A, and D uses A&B but not C

Isn't a "no" better than an ignore?
Are the timers based on item quality? 8 seconds for something like an ID scroll is fine, but a unique better have like an hour attached to that baby.

I think it's a mechanic specifically designed to create misery. To the same degree friendly fire is.

The other players in most of the random parties I join are generally quite courteous and will let you pick up your assigned loot even after the timer runs out.

You should take into consideration that you're playing with a pool of people that are the best the community will ever be.

PoE will probably attract more thoughtful people than a Blizzard release, but a lot of that will be offset by the price of Free.

Please tell me you're joking. Even 10 seconds is a terribly long time for any item.

To be clear it's 10 seconds to pick up an item that is not assigned to you. The assigned player can pick it up at any time.

?

10 seconds is too long.

1 second is negligible.

5 second base is perfect i think. with it going up relative to how far away you are obviously.

this is beta, and while watching on twitch the only consistent complaint i've heard from every streamer is that the timer is too short. it's been tested and it's failed. up it.
For what it's worth, I played a game that had timers on the drops, it didn't work. If someone wanted something that wasn't theirs, they simply prevented anyone else from accessing the item.

Obviously this kind of behaviour would result in the person being ejected from the group, but it still disrupts play and is totally unnecessary.
Yeah I partied with a dude on the first boss today and saw the timers for myself. It's comically nascent, and is obviously a work in progress feature.

Eh, Guildwars 1 uses a system like this and it's alright. It's not like someone can screw you out of a unique after the boss dies.
It would be nice to be able to select options for how loot will be dropped and allocated. If I'm playing with my best friends I don't mind fully FFA loot, if I'm playing with people who are "good" and who I've played with before the current system is perfect; but if I'm playing with a random grab bag of unknown players I really prefer instanced loot and/or long loot timers to make sure everyone has a good time and comes out of the experience having gotten a decent profit.

+1
Could not agree more. If we are seeing 150+ page long threads while in closed beta just imagine what it going to be like in open when more people are frustrated by the current group loot option.
