I take it the item needs to be of the appropriate ilvl in order to roll a unique?

As far as I know, the unique item has the same required ilvl as the base item (read: it doesn't make an item have a higher level requirement).

ilvl on uniques is only important in determining how many sockets the item can have.
5 Iron Rings- 4 magic, 1 rare

10 Engraved Wands- 6 magic, 4 rare

Q&A - Chance Topic

I'm a bit confused by this part of the interview and this topic in general. Chris has touched on it in the past, but I never quite understood what he was getting at with it. I'm never sure if he's saying the chance of a regular item upgrading to unique is a static chance regardless of the base item or if each unique has a different rarity. I have a feeling this is the case, and if it is, the whole log is pointless. I'm hoping he can clarify this (have sent him a message about it) once and for all, but I have a feeling he'll want to keep it a vague topic. In any case, we'll have to wait and see.

After watching that little bit from Kripp's stream, it's my understanding that the chance to roll a unique using an orb IS static. Once you get the unique roll, you then have another roll between all available uniques of that base type.

So let's take the Onyx Amulet for example. Currently there are 3 unique variants for this base type. Let's say for example purposes that Eye of Chayula is most common at 70% of all unique Onyx Amulets. Then let's say Carnage Heart is at 20% and Astramentus at 10%. Now let's say the success rate for proc'ing a unique is .004% using an Orb of Chance. If by chance you actually do get a unique roll on an Onyx Amulet, you then have another roll to decide which one you get. Most likely Eye of Chayula in this example. If you've used the orb on a base item with only one unique variant, then you will always get that unique IF you are successful with your .004% roll.

There are indeed different rarities for different uniques, but it only matters with the Orb of Chance if there are multiple uniques for that base type. If there's only the one, then chance has the same fixed value of rolling it. This means it's best to use chances on base types that can generate a good unique or a valuable rare.

Good news :) The log is still worth keeping around.
RAre chance: ~20%

Unique chance: .3333% or 1/3 of a percent.
pretty sure that is POE's chances.

According to Chris in a previous quote, rares are roughly 1/5.4 or ~18.5% chance. Uniques he didn't comment on.
