Let it Flow - About PoE's User Experience
I read this thinking, "neat post from a month ago" and then realized that it was from a YEAR and a month ago, lol.
I agree with most of the points in this post, and I'd like to add a couple of observations. First, to your point about how terrible the chat interface is in this game. The most annoying of many annoying things about it, IMO, is that if I /remaining or /oos while I'm adventuring with a party, the game forgets that my default mode is whispering or party-chatting to my teammates, so the next thing I say is blorked out into the room. I can't count the number of times I've made stupid announcements to everybody in Sarn just because the game put me into speak mode rather than chat mode after a /remaining. Similarly, if I rethink something I want to say and ctrl-A and Delete to retype a half-finished sentence, it ALSO deletes the person's username, so I have to re-find them in the social menu and re-set it to whisper them. Or re-type their name from memory. Or, of course, blork what I was saying out into the room again if I didn't notice. This is an aggressively bad design decision. And why can't it keep track of the user I was talking to even if s/he has switched characters?! The only thing I strongly disagree with in the OP is about the shape of gems. The shape of gems is not random -- it's very well-designed, and "neutralizing" gems into a thousand vaguely similar circles is a terrible idea. Right now, at a glance I can see which gems are totems, which gems are supports, which gems are minion-related, which ones are auras, and so on, because they are all shaped in logical ways (totems have a little vertical stick on the right-hand side, supports are big and round, minions have skulls, auras have a gold rim surrounding the gem, etc.). I don't think there's any way to make them generic in the way you seem to want them to be while still giving the at-a-glance information that we need. But that's a quibble. Generally this is a great post and still relevant today! "Come to me, exile. Let us speak of death and desync."

" I never said they were easy fixes, but after a year you'd think more of them would have been at least worked on. From what it seems, any changes to the UI are extremely difficult and not worth the effort, since the UI hasn't changed since I started playing back in closed beta.
