Will the OP discuss the new affixes?

Something that might be worth adding to the OP:

When you use a vaal orb on a map, it has a chance of making the map unidentified. But when you get this roll, the map becomes unid but it keeps the original affixes that it had. So effectively you get a free +30% quant bonus when this happens because you already know what mods the map had before you vaal'd it.

That's good to know. So vaal orbs will always be used for higher level maps for that free 30% quant bonus.

Well, the problem is that only happens some % of the time (seems like about 25% in my experience, but need more data). So if you get a good map roll you probably don't want to risk losing it to try for the unid bonus. But in general it does seem like using vaals on maps has less undesirable outcomes than using them on gear.

For reference, I think these are the possible outcomes of vaaling a map. I've probably forgotten one or two.
1. nothing
2. becomes a different map one level higher
3. becomes unidentified (but retains same affixes, just hidden)
4. map is rerolled with 8 mods

Also note that with all of the above, the map becomes corrupted and cannot be changed again in any way. I'm still trying to figure out the best strategy for when to vaal maps. The only things I know for sure are to chisel the map before using the vaal if you want it chiseled, and don't vaal white maps (chance of getting stuck with a corrupted white map that you can't modify)

Thanks for the info kelsiero. Some thorough testing is certainly needed when it comes to vaal orbs and maps.

Thanks, Kelsier, for the useful information.
The chance to Vaal +1% maximum resists on an amulet is less than 1/300.
What is the context that the "potential" in the Map Rating is referring to please? i.e. Better Drops? IMHO it is never really explained.

Thanks

Potential to sustain or improve map pool.

I thought that was the most obvious thing in the world, guess it shows how maps are a world unto themselves.

saving
I'm new to the game and obviously end game maps. I have done a couple 72 maps just fine and have worked my way there just using magic quality maps. Then I found this thread which basically tells me I need to start using alchemy'a and chaos.

I'm not the wealthy ATM 2 exalteds 15 chaos. And I'm just curiouse to know what I should be looking to spend on a map. Obviously if it's going to be to tough ill chaos it. But what I don't want to do is loose all my currency on these maps if I'm not going to get a descent return. What quantity as a minimum should I shoot for on my maps without loosing to much coin?
Any help with maps would be nice.

I used a map earlier and spent 5 chaos trying to get rid of temporal chains in return I got one map lol and vendor loot. Felt demoralizing

I would say up to lvl 72 you will be fine with only magic maps but 74 maybe even 73 and up you start seeing less map drops in my experience. I think the only way to get more maps is the map quantity modifier so aim as high as possible. I tend to aim for 70+ for 73 and up.

It gets quite expensive when rolling maps at these levels. Sometimes you may have to use 10 chaos orbs to get a decent roll.

It's much cheaper in the long run to just join map parties.

74 maps tend to be 1 chisel/alch
75-76 maps 1 chaos
77-78 2-3 chaos

How people can host 74 map runs for 1 chisel only is beyond me. No way you can recover the cost of rolling those maps by 5 chisel (2,5 chaos) from a full group. Even the map is worth much more than that.

Even 74 runs for 1 chaos is a great deal but it's getting harder to fill a 74 map party for 1 chaos. The people in this game are so stingy. Just don't wanna pay for themselves.

Someone posted that spreadsheet where it's calculated how much you should spend for each map tier or something like that a while ago. Anyone know where to find it again?

Note that this guide has not been updated since 9 februari 2014. Maybe the author has abandoned this project. Not sure if everything is still up to date.

Thanks man. I guess the best thing to do is start really paying attention to what I'm getting g back from them. Then justify currency. I'm just hoping to start saving for kaoms heart and loosing currency wasn't what I wanted.
