Idea - Introduction of new Currency orbs - creating better economy

They purpously created the concept of orbs so people would actually use them to craft not as a form of currency.

Wrong. Their intended function was to behave as a currency with their own intrinsic values as consumable items. To contrast, the "gold" in a "gold based" economy has no intrinsic value, purpose, or function, and so its value deflates rapidly without some form of currency sink (a way to remove the currency from the economy), often entirely superfluous, such as armour and weapon repairs. GGG's intention was just that, to avoid a superfluous currency sink as a necessary function of the economy. That is (as was in the beta manifesto) the entire reason they implemented currency orbs that had intrinsic value as consumables; they remove themselves from the economy without being superfluous.[/quote]

You just proved my point, your statement is paradoxical. You just stated that the point of orbs (or currency) is that they have a use, that is, crafting items. They are not meant to be used as gold, and that is the same reason they should have been bartered for. That is, if you are selling an item, you would be looking more towards getting fusings rather than chromatics

My whole point is that this isn't happening now, people are treating currency the exact same way as gold. The fact that they do (other) external things is irrelevant, because the RNG on anything that isn't alterations/transumation/augmentation on maps is way too strong, that there is so much risk

My point is that orbs are being treated the exact same way gold is, with exchange rates acting the exact same way cents/dollars work

No I didn't.

No it isn't.

Sort of. The point of orbs is to act as a form of currency that contains within themselves a valuable means to be removed from the economy (crafting).

No, I never said that. I said that the difference between they (orbs) and a gold based economy, is that gold does not have an intrinsically valuable means to remove itself from the economy, and therefore, in order to prevent inflation, developers need to find ways to do so secondarily. Because gold, in this case, has no intrinsic value, these forms of "gold sinks" are intrinsically worthless.

Some people do that. But the reason most people don't, is because most people don't craft, and it is otherwise easy to find somebody to exchange orbs with.

You're stating the obvious, and acting like it is a problem? Orbs are supposed to be treated as gold. They are used as tender in the exchange of good (or possibly services). That's what currency does.

And my point is the only thing wrong with that, is some idea in your head that this is wrong.

You are arguing in theory, I am arguing in practice

In practice, orbs only have an intrinsic value for a very limited period of the game. After that, they are effectively the same as gold. Its like saying that you can use a hammer to screw a cog, yes its possible, its just god damn stupid and people will use the hammer for what its most effective for, which is hammering nails into walls

Whether or not orbs can be used to craft items is irrelevant, what matters is what happens in practice, and what is hapenning in practice is against the original intention of the orbs

If GGG wan'ts the orbs to be primarily used as a form of gold, then PoE will have the exact same issues that D3 has (in fact its getting them right now which is why we are having this conversation in the first place)

That is not a permanent situation and will change over time.

Each orb can be valued at one of three states:
1) Definitely worth more as currency than craft. At this stage, the orb is used nearly exclusively for trading. None of these orbs leave the economy; therefore, inflation begins to develop, and the value of the orb lowers over time, sinking it into the next category below.
2) Worth roughly the same both as currency and in craft. At this stage, whether the orb is used for craft or as currency is really the whim of the person who has acquired them. Orbs leave the economy at about the same rate they enter, minimizing both inflation and deflation.
3) Definitely worth more as craft than as currency. At this stage, the orb is used nearly exclusively for crafting. Almost all of these orbs leave the economy; therefore, deflation begins to develop, and the value of the orb increases over time, raising it to the next category above.

3) Pandora's Orb

4) Orb of Devolution

Ying and Yang- Neat idea but needs some refinement to be less overpowered.

Essence and Soul- Undermines the game's crafting system (pretty much the OPPOSITE of what orbs are supposed to do). Getting one portion of an item (affixes, links, quality, etc.) with the right stuff is not too hard. Getting them all on the same item is the challenge. This orb makes getting everything on the same item trivially easy. I can't see any way this orb would not tank the value of Fusing and Jeweler's Orbs, and Alchemy would decline slightly.

Pandoras- A bit odd but I guess it could work.

Devolution- Pointless. I foresee no reason anyone would ever use the Orb.

Orb of Magnetism

Orb of Refinement
-Increases item level by 1

Orb of Wonder
- Applies colorless to a random socket(allowing all gem colors)

Magnetism- Buffs would be an interesting interesting way for consumables to go, not much else to say there.

Refinement- Seems like the only usage of this is abuse. It could let you get level 80 gear without ever having reached level 60, for instance. By the time you are level 80 it no longer performs any useful function. Since high level characters would not have much use for this orb, long term there will probably be some difficulty in reducing the supply of this orb from the economy.

Wonder- Obviously overpowered.
