Attack speed is important too. I'm not sure what attack ranges in Path of Exile are (same for 1-handed and 2-handed, or not?), but it's important to note that people would often move out of my range while I was attacking. I'd catch up with them, attack, and miss.

Yea that would be a problem if you can't hit people, so you need MS to get to the target the AS to make sure you can get an attack in.

Another way these can be exploited is to clear all of Twilight Strand, exit the game, then join again: you're at the start of a fresh Twilight Strand. You can basically level up 100% safe continually. Maybe not optimal, but it is likely unintended.

Not a half bad idea, during cut-throats I've been full clearing it at the start to get about 50-60% into lvl 2, so I can get a quick lvl 3 in terrance before starting with the slaughter.

This gives you the possibility to reach level 3 "safe", maybe useful for a late starter - but even then you loose so much time (while grabbig that lowish exp) compared to proceeding that it not seems worthful (you also will find only level 1 items!)

i found a chaos orb in the strand before though

I found an int skill gem (frost nova) in the first chest after the start, at my price holder char from the last race :-D ^^

I actually tried this during the CT I came late to, since I used to do multiple runs to Hillock and town to get the three basic gems for each class. It works alright, but tapers off by 3-4. Skill gem drops are very rare, but since it's really just another zone, anything can drop within level limits.

...I think if you start 'on-time', you're still better served to head into the Terraces and face level 2 critters and get better gear. If you start later, sure, it might give you a bit more of a fighting chance, but not really much of one.
