Can POE 2 Fix names? Please?

And while we're at it can we get, you know, spaces and other non-alphabetic characters? It's not 1985.

You should know that there are some problems with having same names as other people.
Be creative and you ll never run out or names

Sorry that is just a silly answer, and a dismissive one. Names are important to some people. There are plenty of ways to address the issue. As an example you could associate the name with the account name, you could allow the user to choose a last name, or add a title that the player chooses, or many many other solutions.

A modern game that is played online should never restrict a play to a unique single name. It is just bad design.

Clearly you do not care but others do. Some people may want to name their character after someone in a book, or a relative, or whatever, it doesnt really matter. But the player should be able to have whatever core name they want.

We encounter people with the same names all the time in real life yet is unmanageable in a modern online game that is probably played mostly solo anyway.

It is a restriction from 1980s and 1990s software and needs to go.

sigh...
Now I have to explain why we cant have same names..
Jesus..
Ok. We cant have same names because all the servers share same chat rooms so it would be impossible to choose to reach players who share same names therefore there cant be more than 1 character name with the same letters.
Allright?
On top of chatting this might cause scams to happen more often if not always.
Any more questions?

Agreed with OP.

One of the worst parts of PoE is the inability to name your characters whatever you want if someone else nabbed it first. Its so irritating because it shouldn't be something made so difficult and backwards in the first place.

Why would it be so hard to make our accounts the facility for trade with [Account Name]+[Unique ID Number/Letter Code] while characters have their own completely separate and completely cosmetic name. I mean, it obviously takes a lot of work and resources and probably a lot of careful account attention -- but I don't put it out of the developer's ability to do so...

The inability to name your characters what you want may not be at the top of anyone's priority list, but it's glaringly one of PoE's most laughable shortcomings. PoE2 as a fresh slate is a perfect opportunity to remedy this trade/names/account mess and I hope they do so.

Under the current design, yes. But this is a suggestion thread - it's not about limiting thinking to the current design, it's about changing that.

This.

Then again, my impression is that for some ppl changing design is like touching the holy grail...

However, it would be nice if naming, character management, chating, teamplay and guilds would feel more like 2020 in this game...

I have never seen one game with the same name given to different characters. I have nothing more to add.

So you never played any of the Diablo titles?
D3 have it. Even D2 and the original Diablo supported these somehow, because you where able to create and play character offline. D2 had a naming policy if you create a battle net only account, if I remember correctly, but Blizzard removed it on D3.
Another ARPG that comes to my mind is Grimdawn, and I am pretty sure that there are other games that I don't remenber or don't know atm.

Maybe you refere to MMO naming policies? Most of them enforce unique naming per server. Even here you can have two characters with the same name if they are on different servers.

You may not have seen them, but rest assured they've been around a long time. I didn't really play multiplayer PC games until, I guess, around the time my friends and I would play Quake deathmatch in the school computer lab, and even then, you could pick whatever name you like - it just appended "(1)" to someone in the case of duplicates joining the same server.

Now yes, no accounts there, and very small server sizes. So for a more relevant contemporary example, the entire Steam platform allows you to change your display name as often as you like, and that doesn't mean its chat system breaks. It just means the chat system is built on accounts rather than display names, which makes sense in POE anyway because you're talking to a real human player, not one of their characters.
Some people need to chill a little.

1) Those that are dismissive to all suggestions and defensive to EVERYTHING GGG does. You know who you are, yeah you, those founders that think because you payed a thousand bucks you are all of a sudden cheating on your life partner by admitting something in the game can be improved. It aint a perfect game, and your ignorance is nothing but a side effect of you justifying all the money you paid by telling yourself "everything about that gaaaam is paaaarfeeect!".... it aint, improvements can be made.

2) And on the other spectrum those calling the devs lazy and its 2020 and whatever else. Lazy? They are fkng bringing you more content than any developer out there and they were till now a small INDIE STUDIO. We're even getting a new revamp big enough to be a title of its own and in the SAME GAME... Lazy???

Chill people... seriously.

I like both approaches.

On the one hand, having the name you want to have is awesome. Sure. This will eventually however lead to hashtag numbers being added, or worse yet, account names being used as the go to for recognising someone. And no, I do not want my account name to be used for that reason, neither to be known if it can be helped. Its a general thing I used for my entire login, not my character/world building. And if hashtags with numbers become a thing, then how is this any different to doing it yourself now?

Meaning, although its nice to have the name you want, it will never be "just the name want" and something will be attached anyway to it, in which case, ummmm.... you can do that already now??

So on the other side of the coin, I like unique names. And kinda like that approach as well. It sure is annoying when someone takes your name, and even more so if someone does it on purpose (say, someone knows Kripparian always uses Krippers and new game drops and takes the name just to be an a$$)... Same time, I dont want to be one of the 100 and 1 Gandalfs' running around in the game. There is real value to a name being taken and creates more uniqueness to each character.

So end of the day, there are advantages and disadvantages both ways, however I vote for keeping it as is and just add spaces. That should be a thing. Just limit it to 1 space so they can't do multiple spaces in a row.
