One time usable spell
Inspired by MTG cards named "Seal of ..." (http://tinyurl.com/mtgsealof), how about item containing one time usable spell, in a way that item is lost once spell is used? Sure, it might be that rapid gems change will be possible so there won't be a need for something like it - if not, proposed item would be quite useful.
EDIT: I'm pointing not only to mechanic, but visual part of using such an item. Imagine character suddenly stopping, getting seal out of backpack, putting it in front of himself and breaking it, that way unleashing spell - cool or not? It's an interesting idea. It sounds like micromanagement than this game is going for though. Considering that they're removing the need to micromanage potions, I doubt they'd want to replace it with something else.
It's pretty common for these games to have charged items. Charged items can only cast a spell a certain number of times before they need to be recharged or become useless. Forum Sheriff

This could be cool towards the start of the game. As the player will be lacking a large variety of skills. For example there could be a scroll with 60 charges of fire ball.As your mana pool would be lacking towards the start of the game this would be very useful for a caster. As casters require spells for survival. It would be good if these scrolls also got effected by your passives. However these would be extemly unbalanced towards end game. So it would be best if they only spawned round the start act.

Considering long casting time and rarity of it - it should be rare drop - effects I had in mind would work differently than skills. That's why I used word spell. I wasn't aiming at damaging opponents as much as special per-instance buffs.
1. instance gives +10% more EXP 2. instance drop more items per monster 3. instance tend to drop higher quality items 4. instance "spawn" with additional area(s) 5. instance contains more boss-like monsters 6. instance players receive -25% HP debuff ------------------> =o:( EVIL ):o= So, once player enters instance, he breaks the seal and enjoyS "extras" until instance is completed! Why would a player use it if it damages them..
Anyway .. if consumable items are rare people wont use them. You always get that feeling "I could use it now... but there might be something better to use it on later." Cheaper than free... Speedtree

" He meant all the other players in the same instance get the hp loss. " Yeah. That always happens to me. I always end up saving consumable items for when I really need them. But I never actually really need them so I end the game with a million consumable items hoarded up. Forum Sheriff

Haha exactly tpapp157.
However instead of this there could always be shines like out of D2. They arnt consumables so the player is more likely to use them. The reason these are good is you have to use them then and there. So the player "might as well" use it.Of coarse these can be trapped shrines as well : ) (One hit kill fireballs aoe around the shrine FFFFUUUUUU). Cheaper than free... Speedtree

Ehh, seals could be "spawned" with self-destruction timer. Upon BOOOM, seal unleashes debuff - buff effect reverses. Seal could work 2 ways by default:
1. break it one side - buff 2. flip it to other side, break it (or wait timer at 00:00:00) - debuff In both cases, ALL players in instance are affected - that means you also! If seal is broken or self-destruct while player is in town, buff / debuff unleashes to randomly-chosen instance. Sounds like a lot of tensions arising from it :o))) "I am The Banisher, the ill will that snuffs the final candle." - Seal of Doom (MTG)

Shrines? That's your one-time use spell/buff thingy and you don't have to carry it around with you or manage it. Just hope a good one shows up and click it.
