Increased quantity/rarity do not apply with burning damage
I thought of this when I read the 10.2 note for fixing culling strike.
My fire templar has increased quantity and rarity tied to his firestorm skill, with values of 32% and 53%. I've done hundreds of magic-find runs with him, and it really seems like a sizable minority of the time, these gems have no effect. Furthermore, it actually seems like quantity/rarity from my equipped gear (values 21%/140%) don't even apply when monsters die from burns. Since all drops are random, this is difficult for me to prove, but with the sheer volume of the runs I've done I think the pattern I've recognized may be valid. It would seem to make sense, since burning damage is likely applied as a separate effect in its own right. Perhaps it is applied without being linked to the player who caused the burning damage, which would also explain the circumvention of all modifiers tied to the player. IGN: Tim_theEnchanter

IIQ/IIR support gems apply on hit, they cannot apply to deaths that do not occur form hits from the supported skill, such as burning to death. This is known and we hope to be able to change it in future.
IIQ/IIR on gear do apply, because the burn is still caused by you, it just has no link to any specific skill.
Oh, is this why Fire Penetration support gems don't seem to apply to burning damage as well? It would be great to have that straightened out!
Also I didn't know IIQ/IIR on gear would still apply to deaths caused by poison/burning, glad to hear that. |

Everyone would use fire trap + culling strike + item quantity/rarity if burning damage works like the GGG guys want it too. I would be happy with that, but some people might not like it.

" Well, unless you specifically build/gear for burn damage you won't really be doing all that much with it. Especially against fire resistant targets since your damage gets reduced initially, and that value is used to calculate the burn damage which is then also reduced again by resists. |
|
" Er, no? Penetration supports only reduce resistances. Edit: ah, I get it. :) Last edited by Vipermagi#0984 on Mar 6, 2013, 9:39:38 PM

" Right but if you have penetration linked to a spell, say fireball, it will only reduce resistances for the damage calculation of the initial cast, and then the burn DOT you cause does not benefit from it and does hardly any damage as a result. |
|
"Yes, because that's fundamentally how penetration works. It can't apply to burning without being something completely different.
May I confirm that spectres raised out of Burned Miscreations(the ones with the unrighteous fire aura) suffer from the same problem?
If mobs die to their unrighteous fire, attached IIQ and IIR gems would have no effect aye? |
|
" I was thinking more that people would just set the trap down 1s before mobs die to kill them with culling strike and get the bonus from the item quantity/quality gems. Any damage can cull an enemy, no matter how low it is. IGN: @Deltrus
