" It's a war of attrition and the Taliban have all the time in the universe to plan ambushes, place IEDs, do guerilla raids and wait... They are not in a hurry and their "operational costs" are almost non-existent. The amount of willing fighters for jihad is almost endless too. I'm sure that the army knows that staying there is BS, but US is stuck in politically. If Trump (or anyone else for that matter) pulled out, he'd be attacked by both neocons and neolibs for "handing the country over to the Taliban". Even tho everybody knows the mission is BS, has no purpose and cant be "won", they still need to pretend otherwise. Trump will be blamed and attacked no matter what he does: pulls out, sends reinforcements, nukes it... so maybe he's just washing his hands, let the generals do the generaling and take the eventual blame.
