I suppose you dont have to have it.. but it does make it so you can stand in groups of mobs and not worry, or even stand on traps. Just makes it so you recharge faster vs the cooldown of immortal call. If you read the math section on that CA build I linked the deeper explanation is in there. They are very similar in general, trickster is more mobile and faster for good survivability via mobility but using this combo of wicked ward from occult and soul strike quiver makes you pretty damn tanky.
