6 Socket... [ilvl 37] two handed sword.

It dropped just before the boss chamber in Kaom's Stronghold, normal difficulty, on standard.
Did they change when 6 sockets can be added to an item?

FYI it wasn't from a strongbox and there wasn't any on the way there.
It was from a pack of blues, with a gold and some white mobs that came rushing in.


I used a wisdom scroll on it, just to check if the mods on it somehow made it jump over 50, but it didn't change from [ilvl 37] after identifying it.

That sounds about around the level you can start seeing 6 socket items. It's just that they drop so infrequently that you are usually in the 40s or 50s by the time you see one.

I've found two voll's protectors, ilvl 35, that I thought were garbage because I couldn't six socket/link them. Now I'm wondering if it's possible.

It's possible there might be a new method of "bypass;" currently iLvl 35, under normal rules, can get up to 5-socket items. Chances are the item was exposed to some process that allowed "+1 sockets" or otherwise bypass the limits some examples:

• Using Vorici's crafting bench ignores iLvl when socketing.
• Strongboxes can have +1 or even +2 to sockets; these ignore iLvl as well.
• I believe some Tormented Spirits may, in fact, ALSO have an impact on the sockets: they certainly can have rather oddly-specific effects on the loot drops beyond just the clearly-obvious massive bumps to quantity and rarity. It very well may be one Spirit can also have a chance to add an extra socket.

Ever since Vorici came out in 1.2, it's been possible to 6S/6L *ANY* item that could have it, regardless of its iLvl.

In short: crafting benches don't care what the iLvl is. You can go to Vorici's bench, and spend 350 Jeweler's to get your item 6-socketed.

As for linking, Orbs of Fusing do NOT check the item's iLvl; they merely check how many sockets it CURRENTLY HAS. So once you have your item 6-socketed, feel free to link it any way you want.
