Riot/LoL did this with their "limited" skins. at the end of the day they simply said, "fuck you losers" to the people who bought them believing they would never be released again.
On that note: I am continually surprised GGG gives people all of ONE day to buy some of their limited things. A week really wouldnt be unreasonable at all. I dont see the point of releasing something unannounced on a US sunday for a day. It is a poor financial decision on their part imho.
