Right click attacks.
So when you right-click a skill or normal attack that doesn't "cast", it walks to the spot where you right-click and then attacks there. I think that if you right-click it should attack/cast right where you are, in the direction of your mouse.
It's been this way in pretty much all RPG games, and IMO it should be that way. Left click should be the only way to move. This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

hold down shift key?

"That's what shift is for. If you right-click on a guy with a melee attack skill, do you actually want to swing at the air in front of you rather than go attack that guy with the skill? | |
" I think the functionality desired is roughly as follows: On right-clicking an area (not an enemy) with a melee, non-AoE attack skill: If there is an enemy within a certain radius of the destination, attempt to use the skill on that enemy. If there are multiple enemies, pick the closest one (at random among ties). If there is no enemy within that radius, attempt to move to that location without using any skill. Oh, and forgot to add: this would probably make sense for the keyboard skills as well, to avoid having too many different systems. I have wandered through insanity; I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" I'd prefer just attacking anything within a certain radius of you as you move from where you are to where you are clicking. That's how Diablo II had it, and it was a very good system.
Yours has the advantage of being able to ignore near things, but I dunno. It seems awkward to have to pull the mouse in close like that maybe? Maybe not. |

" Yes, that's EXACTLY what I was trying to suggest, thank you for describing it better. |

Reviving this thread because I feel this mechanic is extremely clunky, especially when the character AI doesn't bother to automatically hit any mobs near your cursor when you do reach the location and activate it, or when holding shift.
I don't mean to sound rude, but I can't help the way people interpret my words.

" I'd like to bring this up again as well, as I think this is a feature working as intended for ranged/AoE based skills but not complete for melee based skills. Expanding on the OP, this effect is only apparent for all other keys other than the Left Mouse Button (LMB). So by default this includes Middle Mouse Button, Right Mouse Button (RMB), Q, W, E, R, and T. For example, if I bind Heavy Strike to the LMB and click+hold on an enemy 5m from my character, my character will move to that enemy and attack with that skill until that enemy is either dead or I release LMB. If I bind Heavy Strike to the RMB and click+hold on an enemy 5m from my character, my character will move to that location and attack with that skill and keep attacking only until I release RMB. The enemy can be dead long before this happens, wasting mana/health in many cases. This effect is easy to test, simply bind Heavy Strike to RMB click and hold on a vacant location 2-5m away from the character, and watch as it moves to that location and starts swinging wildly at nothing. Try the same again with the ability bound to LMB and watch it do nothing but move to that location. For all melee purposes LMB works as expected, but I suspect RMB and any other key follows the rules of: A) If cursor is on target, lock on, move into range and perform skill until RMB released. B) If no target at the cursor's location move to range of cursor and perform skill in cursor's direction until RMB released. ...Which may be the desired outcome for any ranged/area effect based skills (including Leap Slam, Whirling Blades, etc type skills), but is not for certain melee based skills (Heavy Strike, Glacial Hammer, etc). I've also noticed it sometimes takes a bit more precision to trigger a target lock-on (might be lag actually) and if triggering RMB skills before that lock-on, the character will attack wildly at the cursor as described above (B). So Mark_GGG would it be possible to perhaps toggle the functionality of each key (LMB, MMB, RMB, Q, W, E, R, T) to function the way the player desires to suit ranged/melee combat? These toggles may only need to be described a bit better than Ranged:[Move and/or attack in direction] and Melee:[Move and/or attack only if target exists]. At this stage though I'll just deal with it :) Cheers (Edited: Did some more testing :) ) Last edited by xenaxial#7929 on May 23, 2013, 5:40:53 AM
