1.3 ✮ The Crit DoT Chin Sol build ✮ Puncture Trap / Ice Shot (Build of the Week S3E3)
ANYWAYS...
To rrtson, Thank you for coming up with this build. Saw it on Build of the Week (kudos to that!) and loved the concept. I am playing it now and finding the elemental torrents that occur from firing into kited packs to be both visually and mechanically gratifying. The fact it's budget-friendly, focuses on maximizing potential per attack, and made use of the quirky Three Dragons helmet makes it my favorite build in PoE since I've started playing. Happy New Year! Casual Alt-Life is best Life. Gen 1: Spectre Necromancer, Caustic Trapper, Righteous Incinerator, 3Dragons Deadeye, Elemental Raider Gen 2: Flicker Blade Vortexer, Perandus Hierophant, Iron Commander, Poison Flurrier Gen 3: Cycloning Slayer, Berserker Witherstormer, LL SRS Auramancer. Didn't get a chance to read through ALL 65 pages, but I feel a good item for this build that's been working wonders for me while running through the levels and also a cheap alternative for a belt is Prismweave; since you're constantly flasking, you get a nice 40%~ Increase in Elemental Damage.
Cheers! | |
Right… so I’ve done a lot of playing and testing to get a feel for the difference between pierce and PPAD in a 5L setup of Ice Shot. In short, my point of view has not changed and my conclusion is that Pierce is only really superior once you have that drillneck hanging on your back and your base DPS is at a certain level. Also, I’m not afraid to state that a decent harbinger is far better for ice shot than a chin sol while a chin sol is better for puncture trap (obviously).
I’m also convinced that playing a HC league vs playing in Standard has impact on the moment at which Pierce becomes the better choice. Sure you can build full DPS in HC and use pierce early on but the risk of a one way ticket to standard is high. At this moment I am level 85 in the Bloodlines league. Since I have to focus on survivability here my DPS suffers for the purpose of getting more life and evasion. This also makes pierce not the best option early on. So, when switching from Chin Sol to a Harbinger bow my crit chance went from 30% to over 50%. Critting is what makes this build so much fun as only a crit will shock and prolif the shock. DPS was boosted but I still had PPAD in my 5L set up (Ice Shot – WED – Prolif – Life Leech – PPAD). With this setup my DPS was 11k which is good for soloing. Even without pierce getting a crit would burn the room down. Using the Chin Sol meant DPS was about 2k lower which didn’t feel comfortable also because of the much lower crit chance. Since everybody here is so strict about Pierce I switched it in for PPAD and since they are both dex gems they could be interchanged easily. With a decent rare quiver my pierce chance was at 76%. DPS dropped from 11k to 9K and this was very noticeable! While soloing I could really notice the burns from crits and HoA were lower with pierce than with PPAD. The higher raw damage from PPAD means considerable higher burns. It’s true I had to shoot into a group of mobs more often than when using Pierce but mana is not really an issue. I have some mana leech from the passive node and together with pots I never run out. If I scored a crit and mobs walk into the corpse with the shock and burn prolif they go down much faster with PPAD than with Pierce. I’m now actually using a bit of an unconventional way to get mana back… I’m using the nodes that give mana on kill and this 20 mana on kill together with the leech basically means killing a mob gives as much mana back as the cost of firing an ice shot. So far this has been working out fine for me. Then the moment was there where I saved up enough currency to buy a Drillneck!! 3,5 ex worth in currency poorer (which was most of my fortune in Bloodlines) I was able to buy an un-ID-ed drillneck. With max AS and max life roll I was lucky I guess. Now it was time for a spin with my brand new quiver. Yes, NOW I understand why people rejected my arguments. I pointed out earlier that without a drillneck PPAD is better than Pierce or at least on par. I respecced some of the physical damage nodes to get the 30% pierce node to get 100% pierce chance and the 39% less phys damage was made up almost exactly with the increase in pierce chance and the damage increase from drillneck because of that. With my current gear I’m at 11.3k DPS with 100% pierce chance and while soloing it’s amazing. Life is 4,2k which I would like to see higher but with 49% evasion, 40% dodge and 30% spell dodge it’s been sufficient so far up to lvl85. I’m not using Maligaro’s Virtuosity but instead gloves with life on them. Since three dragons does not have any life I can’t really afford to have more pieces of gear without life on them. It’s tempting to get a Maligaro but my current gloves still give a good chunk of DPS while also giving a good bit survivability. This is the gear I am using now. Not the best but it’s not standard league with access to more resources etc. Gear is about half self-found/crafted half bought. Besides the drillneck of 3,5ex I spent about 20 / 25 chaos on upgrades. The bow was a lucky single alchemy orb and even though it's not the best Harbinger out there it does the job. You don’t stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing. kokofaser: the tree is just broken around Thick Skin which requires one additional point to complete.
@ziumbala: The armor is not a central piece of the build. You can use any armor you want as long as you fulfill your life and res requirement. Ranger builds list: /917964
When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch? If the witches watching watches watch the same watch while you watch which witch watches which watch, they switch watches; then, the watch switching witches watch which watch you watch. Watching witches watch watches is not for the faint of heart... |

hi all,
I've been inspire by this guide, and decide to try my own ice shot ranger. I've been playin mostly ranged builds through my entire poe adventure and tbh I never looked back. Anyway, to not make my post TL/DR, here is what I'm rocking atm (lvl 72 - at the time of the post): Gear:
Spoiler
This is a slightly different take on ice shot then the guide, but hear me out. Firstly why not ele profi ? simple cause i use chain (for now) - as i dont have dirllneck and pierce nodes taken (yet) this gives me much greater AOE. Bow choice - its not a chin sol...the reason why i picked up the bow is attack speed, I may have less crit and traps dont do so much dmg, but the speed, oh man, it amazing. The trap setup, well I dont have it (yet) I need to level the gems up and take some trap nods to make up the dmg. lastly my current tree:

YES I support the game, NO I don't agree with many GGG decisions
Lab still sucks balls. I miss Zana already. | |
" I see you have some lightning damage on your gear. This is a really bad thing for this build. I remember when levelling I found my (AoE) dps not satisfying till I realized I still have some added lightning damage on my gear. This can destroy corpses so no prolif happens. You will notice the improvement when getting rid of lightning damage alltogether. If chain and attack speed works for you enjoy it but shooting in a group of weak mobs and watch them explode is quite satisfying. Beste map mod for this build imho is fractured :) Lioneye's is a no-go in bloodlines as you increase the change of killing yourself on reflect dramatically. You don’t stop playing because you grow old, you grow old because you stop playing.
