Very much agreed, it would also auto-stack all items in your inventory, I would welcome that feature with open arms :)

Another vote here for auto-sorting and auto-stacking.
In some other games of theis genre I swear I've spent a third of the play-time just sorting out the inventory. :P
Every hour of every day is worth living, so live it well.

2 row item + 2 row item + 1 row item
1 row item x5
With six rows, all of a sudden the backpack feels like it is much easier to manage inventory because there are now more stacking options:
4+2
4+1+1
3+3
3+2+1
3+1+1+1
2+2+2
2+2+1+1
2+1+1+1+1
1+1+1+1+1+1
There are now nine vertical variations with a six row backpack compared to only five variations when the backpack is only five rows tall.
The growth of the backpack by only 12 squares (20%) will increase the utility of the backpack by 80%! In my opinion, this will greatly diminish complaints about backpack size, and it also makes the UI more intuitive.

It's not "totally" needed. Call me old fashioned but I rather like sorting out my inventory for myself. I don't want things be made easier.

That's good stuff there. All I want is a one button click that puts all 1 (2,3,4 etc) cube items together to help manage space, especially for the stash...That place can get out of control. It could be made even more intelligent to organize armor, weapons, gems and flasks. Someone has to remember this feature from Dungeon Siege 1 and 2.
To the guy above, maybe not "totally" necessary, but certainly a welcomed feature that I know many would like. If you don't like/want to use it, spend the time to organize your stuff manually while I hit my one button and go kill more monsters.

I have other idea, why not making the inventory re-sizable? This way you can add as many items will be allowed to carry without having to count the squares occupied by each item.

The inventory is too small for this to be needed. It would be a completely useless feature.

On the topic of the inventory size in comparison to item sizes... That's a feature. You're supposed to be limited on inventory space, and things aren't supposed to fit nicely without any player effort. Adding inventory space or resizing items removes inventory management from the game. While it would surely be simpler, it takes away from the loot-based aspect of the game (being able to carry more loot with less decision-making involved).
