Hatred aura - Allies don't gain "your" physdmg as cold but their phys dmg as cold instead
As said in the title I think there is either a spelling error in the Hatred gem description or the mechanic of allies gaining "your" phys dps as cold got broken somewhere along the lines.
We tried to break Hatred for a good 30 min today .. trying to get an aura efficiency char to have a high level beartrap on their bar with no phys dmg main skill to get that bonus to the whole group. And we couldn't make it work .. Hatred always seemed to give my partner his max phys dmg attack/spell as cold .. instead of mine as it says in the description. A typo or a broken mechanic .. or did we miss something? PS : My hatred was a higher level then his .. i think. Should have verified that before posting here sorry :( This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

It works like all auras. When you are under the influence of an aura, you get the bonus as if you were running that aura. So when you see that hatred buff in the corner of your screen, it's giving the buff of you having hatred, not of you getting somebody else's damage multiplier. You do get the extra effects of Increased Effects of Auras.

It's just a curiosity of English grammar. Stuff about words.

It does not specify in the description that all the allies gain the damage based on the physical damage of the caster. The "your" used is plural. Due to English not specifying this, and "damage" not pluralising in this case, this is ambiguous when written in English, and we have to rely on people understanding that it works like all auras - applies a buff to each entity that is affecting only that entity.
If I say "You should take of your hat", it's clear that "your" is used in the singular. If I address a member of a group by saying "You and your friends should take off your hats", then it's clear (from the plural of "hats") that "your" is plural - each of your friends should take off their own hat, not all of them trying to take off your (singular) hat. But because English uses the same word "your" for the plural and the singular case, we can only tell this from the plural "hats", and not all words pluralise like that to disambiguate. If instead I said "You and your friends should comb your hair", then because "hair" in this context is a collective noun and does not pluralise, the phrase is ambiguous - it could be interpreted that each person in the group should comb their own hair, or that you and all your friends should all only be combing your (singular meaning) hair, and your friends don't need to comb their own, just yours. The only way to tell is from context. "Damage" is similar to "hair" in that it doesn't pluralise here, so we're left with an ambiguous phrase due to English not bothering to differentiate different forms of "your". This would never have happened in Latin, but I don't think Chris would let me change the game's default language to Latin at this late stage, for multiple reasons. | |
LoL. That was funny.
On the bright side, you probably wouldn't see an increase in bug reports about people losing their DPS when taking Ancestral Bond with a Latin tooltip. Guild Leader The Amazon Basin <BASIN>

Couldn't you make "your" "their"?
"You and nearby allies add x% of their Physical Damage as Cold Damage" not as grammatically waterproof, but more informative... Thanks for the long response Mark .. much appreciated!
I was thinking the same as SonOfSon, a "their" might not be the best eng. but would clear up this confusion. PS : POE Default German or RIOT :P Last edited by Vods#4458 on Apr 23, 2014, 10:51:30 AM

Or get rid of the pronoun altogether. "add x% physical damage..."
I don't think anywhere else in the game it's specified whose damage an increase is based off of. Guild Leader The Amazon Basin <BASIN>

Already answered, but just think of it like "Allies gain a buff that reads 'Adds X% of your physical damage as Cold'"
