Resistance overkill?

I understand that most pieces of gear like rings, chests, boots, etc. are desired to roll triple resistances for godly end game gear. However, I have hit the resist cap with reasonably decent, but not gg endgame gear in most slots. Is there any reason to bother getting tri res in remaining slots now? I know certain maps have a minus max resistance affix, but having resistance overkill wouldn't mitigate that debuff one bit would it?
The problem is when you will need to deal more damage. High damage and triple resist on top of other mitigation stats will get harder to stack on a single piece.

Right, I understand that part. Hence, I am thinking about trying to fulfill some needed survivability in other slots in place of resistances. All I want to know is if there is any practical application of going beyond the cap in any situation, or if any resistances above the cap are just "overkill" so to speak.
ppl go over res cap to keep capped resist even when doing ele weakness maps....minus max over capped doesnt matter...its purely for the ele weakness map mod

Raising your max resist can prove useful.

I believe raisong your resist for minus res maps will do nothing.

Overstacking resistance is "overkill" as you say.

Example: you are capped at 75 all resistances, but your current gear could 95 if it could. If you then enter a map with the "players have "-20% to elemental resitances" you will drop down from 75 to 55, even if your gear is better than that.

In the end, 20% resist (your overkill) is wasted and could be used for other passive nodes or affixes on items.

Not sure about this.

Well you just said what i meant ( we agree )

Raising max res = useful
raising res above max res = not useful.

Sorry I accidentally inverted my comprehension. My apologies.

Like silversidup wrote: It's for the elemental weakness mod on maps. Ele weakness doesn't lower the maxcap but your actual resistance (if you have 120 fire res on gear you still would be at the max cap). Without overmax you will take 44% MORE damage with that mod. If your non capped max is 95 that will be lowered to 24% more damage.
BTW works for curses too.
