where do you guys get your gems?
I have made several characters, one of each class, and my highest is a 59 ranger. I'm still finding gems and support gems I never have seen before, ones that have a level 10 or 20 requirement on it. Is their some method everyone uses that I don't know about?
Like the HC race that took place... I was watching some streams of people and it's like they had every single gem they were ever going to need as soon as they could use it. They didn't show how they got it, but they never had to improvise and use a gem until they got the one they actually needed for their spec. Is their a specific place that a person farms in game for gems? Or redoes a specific quest if that's even possible? At this point I don't care about the quality of the gem, we would all prefer them to have some quality... But what I'm saying is I'll take a zero quality gem as long as it has the specific attack or aura that I want for my build. Oh and one more offtopic question... Is their a source or third party website that lists potential drop rates or something along those lines? I would like to get an idea of what and where certain armor/weapons etc drops in game. I've been farming fellshrine ruins on merciless difficulty for the passed 10 levels without getting a single upgrade neither in weapons/armor/jewelry/gem quality. My guy is still wearing level 30 armor and level 10-20 jewelry. I don't mind farmning for how ever long it takes to get the required gear I need to progressed passed the content but I just want to know if I'm farming the right places. I used the google chrome app to combine some items I found into alchemy orbs and upgraded my weapon slightly but even that is 20 levels behind. IGN: Narbays

If you really had made one character of each class then it's very easy to get gems from quest rewards. Also, trading with other players.

I have wondered that myself. In the HC races I doubt it is from other characters since some of them are so short duration there wouldn't be time.

" Find a white weapon that is your level (Requires level 30). Use 4 blacksmith's whetstones on it. Use an alchemy orb on that. Repeat for all of your armor. Also there is no higher level jewelry, there's only 'one set' of rings and amulets. |

Dignato is right, many of your best items will come from crafting. If you're not finding rares with the stats yer looking for, keep an eye out for a well-linked white and quality/alchemy it. You don't need awesome items to progress either.
In fact I'd advise against item farming and only using the drops you find along the way as you progress (some increased quantity and rarity help). Otherwise your char will drastically over-level the content, negatively effecting your exp and currency drops. Getting skill gems is all about luck. You'll get most of the common ones from quest rewards, but the most valuable ones are drop only. As far as I know, one area is not better than another- it's completely random. The only factors are the item/monster level and your increased quantity. Monsters can only drop items <= their level. In my experience more gems drops in the higher acts/difficulties. As for the 3 hour hardcore race, a smart build will only use skill gems that are guaranteed to be obtained from the quest rewards. You don't have time to go town, let alone negotiate a trade! And in the case of the latest event, parties were disabled so trading was impossible. The race is almost like an ironman event. " Not sure I get this right. Are you saying a level 15 character in a level 20 zone has better chances of finding currency than a level 25 character in that same zone? |

" Correct. The exact details are in the second post of the mechanics thread. http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/11707 |

Thanks to the person who answered my question regarding Gems. That the "item quantity" affix is the one I should be stacking. Right now I stacked the wrong one, I have 120 item rarity and zero quantity.
As far as items go, I'm set in that department. I alternate between farming merciless fellshrine ruins or one of the open zones in act 2. I have already beaten merciless, but it involved a few deaths especially in tightly packed areas with no room to kite. I am a ranger afterall. And I did it with level 20-30 gear with bad socket combinations you name it. In order to actually upgrade one of my pieces, I would not only need a good base white item which I regularly discard, but I would need several dozen fusion orbs to get 5/6 link chains in weapons/chest. Which again my deficit of orbs/gems is most probably linked with my zero "item quantity" set. IGN: Narbays Last edited by narbays#1524 on Aug 19, 2012, 6:46:59 PM

" I'm sorry but this is not right, from the page you have linked: " You may have confused drop rate of currency item with exp gain. Still, being many levels below an area gives an exp penality as if you were overleveled: " |

Thanks, I guess I did confuse XP with currency. At least I found the mechanics thread to sort it out. :)
