Unique item that links to other items. Is it possible?

I thought an interesting idea might be for a unique item to link to other items. For instance, a Unique piece of chest armor that could link to your boots, helmet and gloves. The spots that it links to would be the slot that's closest to the top right of the gloves, top left of the boots, and the bottom-most slot of the helmet.

I was wondering if it's possible to program something like this into the game because it'd be a really entertaining concept to see.

Here's a shoddy example I made to help visualize the idea:

This is a freaking awesome idea!!!

I've long thought that six linked sockets was just not enough, despite the fact that there is a built in system for limiting abuse via increased cost.

Your idea would allow the linking of 18 or more skill gems into a single attack! Sure it might cost 300 mana per use, but I'm sure it would be worth it.

Ultimately though I see this as a brilliant solution to the problem of allowing "set" items into PoE without introducing the kind of build uniformity that the devs have cited as reasons not to allow item synergies. This idea cleverly side-steps that problem while still letting players try to complete a set.

Thumbs up.

If you can see on the image, the sockets on armour are not linked together, so this unique chest would add one linked socket to helm, gloves and boots allowing to have 3x 5 link instead of 3x 4 + 6... May be worth it, may be not, don't see any gamebraking changes, I like it :-D
I'm going to throw in my support too! If this is at all possible in the engine. I do think it should come with "always has 3 sockets" and "sockets can not be linked." Maybe one armor piece for each attribute? That way no one is left out, but put them in the list of harder to find uniques.
now that has got to be the most unique idea i've seen

if you carry it a bit further...with perhaps the proper orb...you could unlink your chest slots...and with another orb...link the chest to another piece of armor...if the linked slots are the same color...so it may be possible to do this with any armor...with a 'linking orb' maybe...

kudos...now we got a think tank... lol

+10 dude

edit:
as far as dev time...it seems like it would just be a simple pointer from/to each item, instead of pointers inside each item...same mechanic...

more! more! make me work another 90 seconds!

Other than looking cool, what'd the benefit be of doing something like this instead of just adding another slot to items? Because that's essentially all you're doing.
a central location for all you support gems maybe?...lol
maybe give it some 'link' stats?

like...linking these slots will give an additional 'x%'
to 'y gem' stats...

perhaps...linked items with the same stat...say shield...
would get an additional shield boost...or crit chance...or rarity...

seems there would be as many options for something like this as there are for individual items

I like the idea, adds more combustibility and less orb rolling frustration (potentially).

+1
Someone suggested it as in an orb before.

I think this is going to be OP.
6 link weapon becomes 7 would be too good for some people. This will make the game item > skill.

That's why it only links to boots, gloves and helmet.

Also, consider the fact the armor itself only has 3 slots, instead of the potential 6.
