4 spots in map device...why?

A map is 1x1 and the map device is 2x2 spots. Do we know why this is?
Combine maps together in the future? A secret effect depending on where you place and run the map from? |

Someone should design a unique map that uses a 2x2 size in inventory... with 4x map size and stuff ;)

Would love to see this be utilised in mapping in the future, ways to combo stuff. As far as I know it doesn't do anything, but there already been a bunch of good ideas in earlier threads on how they could be used in interesting ways to spice up mapping.
