Why is an Exalted Orb so good?

So if I get a white item with great links and want to upgrade it, I'll need tons of orbs to finish it. I need to get it from white to yellow. I need to make sure it has the right mods. I need to make sure the mods have high stats. I need to make sure I can change any mods that are bad.

If I get a blue item with 3 good stats, I need to upgrade it to yellow, then add 3 more stats on it and hope it's what I want ... and this involves a ton of other gems

Exalted Orb only seems good if you have a yellow item with 4-5 of the stats you want, and then you gamble on the 6th. Then if it's bad, you have to start using other orbs to modify it, and you can lose the 4-5 that are good, and then it just ends up trash and you rage

Why is this item so good? Like, before I looked at what it was, I thought it would have been something like "Choose an affix/suffix and add it to an item, limit one per item"

Now THAT would be hot
I exalted an item once..

I got +3 armor.

Yep..+3 armor.

Never again. Save your currency, trade it for an item instead, crafting is not worth it unless you stumbled across a chest that popped exalts all over your screen.

Keep in mind they are one of the rarest currencies in the game, next to only Mirrors.

Daily reminder that no one even remembers blessed orbs exist

Divines and eternal orbs are rarer.
"so good" might not be the best way to phrase it, as its value now comes mostly from its trading value, not from its intrinsic value, and its trading value is so high because its drop rate is low.

As a crafting orb its hard to pin an intrinsic value on it, as all the orbs do something slightly different... You could say that intrinsically 1xscouring + 1xtrans + 1xregal + 4xexalted will always be equal to or greater than the value of one chaos orb, because that combo together will reroll a rare and ensure it has 6 affixes whereas a chaos rolls between 4 and 6 affixes...

The short of it is: Exalted Orbs are worth so much in trading for two reasons:
1) Because their drop rate is low,
and 2) Because no amount of more common orbs can accomplish what it does.

Chaos orbs would likely never reach that high in value even if their drop rates were switched with Exalted orbs, because the cheaper alternative of scouring+alchemy accomplishes the same thing and is relatively common.

why are diamonds so good?

well they arent, they are just rare.

pretty much the same principle applies here, the only thing i know they really get used on is maps sometimes, but at this point in the game no one is really using them outside of trading for better items. at least they shouldn't be using them yet, using them at this point would be an expensive mistake.

Diamonds buy you a woman, didn't you know? Women's durability degrades over time though and requires you to repair them with more diamonds.

This is the only known use for diamonds.
Exalteds are the best thing in game full stop.

now buy mine in Onslaught for 25 chaos :p

Holy crap, wrong on all counts. You've likely taken in some generalised propaganda somewhere and neglected to use your initiative to find balancing facts.

Firstly, the reason diamonds are so good is this:

There is no other substance which channels light in such an awe-inspiring way. Not only is this aesthetically pleasing to every eye (as opposed to colour biases of other gems), but this also channels deep into the psychology of the male/female attraction process, whereby the female has to use every means at her disposal to stand out from the beauty standing next to her. The male will turn their head in the direction of the first girl to 'get his attention', at which point the first female to attain this attention has the best chance to maintain it. The best diamonds in the best set-up get the best effect:

On top of this, diamonds also have an industrial, manly use, in that diamonds are one of the hardiest substances on the planet, providing cutting tools with incredible durability:

On the subject of rarity, diamonds are not rare by any means, this is why you can pick up all those dirt cheap diamond what-nots on the sellstuff tv channels so easily. Good quality, large diamonds, however, do have an element of rarity. Good quality, large diamonds, styled into jewelry by incredibly well skilled and excellent tasted artisans are indeed incredibly rare:

So, yeah, bigger subject than just rare equals valuable. Most diamonds are pretty common and not very expensive:
