Max res is a must. Life and armour depends of your build but i would say life > armour

I would say that armor is next to useless. Life and resist are MUCH MUCH MUCH more important. Honestly I would not suggest getting any armor nodes on the passive tree at all, they are wasted points as armor boosts are completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
I would suggest maxing your resists, above the 75% cap (elemental adaptation/purity), then stacking life. Stack some more life. Then continue to ignore armor/evasion and stack more life. When you think you have enough life, try to get more life. |

Most times you´re tricksing the system with a combination of abilitys when armor is a matter
that are -IR (iron reflex) -grace -endurance charges -granite flasks The armor you get alone from *armor* is not good enough. Therefore your focus should go on maxing out resis and life. edit: but to answere the question armor itself as a flat value doesn´t matter for starting maps. It´s more the ability to aquire the maximum phys dmg reduction rate in situation where you need it most with flasks and skills. The moment you´re able to reach 80% pdr with those you´re absolutly fine to go. The magic is more in the resistance and hp. But no one can tell how you play so it´s your turn to try it just out. What can never be lent or earned? Somewhat, that devours everyone and everything: A tree that rush. A bird that sings. It eat bones and smite the hardest stones. Masticate every sword. Shatters every shrine. It defeat mighty kings and carry mountains on lightly wings. What am i? Last edited by Spysong192#7559 on May 7, 2013, 5:15:11 PM

Uhhh armor is not next to useless. You want to have at least 6-7k armor after buffs (grace (assuming iron reflex), determination, etc.)
By no means should you be PRIORITIZING armor, but you still want to have it. Make sure you have a granite with the iron skin mod as well, for those very hard hitting physical mobs (e.g. bears, golems, etc.) I'm at 4k health with 7.2k armor after grace, and I'm soloing 73 maps just fine. " Armor is most definitely close to useless. With mediocre gear + iron reflexes + grace + determination you have plenty of armor. As stated, iron skin granite flask will give all the armor you need and you can essentially chain them constantly if your killing speed is decent. Armor nodes are just about as useless as +mana from flasks. My Ranger has over 10k armor without a single armor node and rather mediocre evasion gear. Honestly I cannot really tell the difference between 5k and 10k armor. Small hits don't hurt and heavy hits/crits hurt like hell either way. Essentially the difference is dieing in 2.7 undead rhoa charges instead of 2.3 undead rhoa charges... that seems like the definition of useless. |

What is the point of getting IR, grace, determination, and using granites if its useless?
Useless means you won't need it at ALL, since it won't create any USE for you. Point taken though, but I think instead of 'useless', better phrasing would be 'useful only in large amounts?' IDK. |

" Guess I could have been less vague. I was specifically referring to Passive nodes and seeking high armor mods over resist/life mods being completely pointless. You get all the armor you need from gear + aura's. However that last statement I made " highlights the problem with armor in general. It scales terribly bad. Depend on how much you are going to be hit, for maps lvl 66, 3.5k HP , 80 resists , 5000 armor is enough for HC.
And don't listen to the previous posts, armor greatly increase your survivability, just not against the hardest hit. It means you will be able to tank full pack of mobs when other will have to kite, but in no circumstances will you ever be able to tank a pack of rhoas charges. IGN : Anal_ravage

Unless you have armour in ridiculous quantities, it is useless.
many small hits that you take without armour are easily healed through attacking with leech + health regen on a high health pool. The one large hit that does 3k+ dmg will ignore armour unless you have been stacking it to stupid heights. And even then, you're going to cap at 75% which means you still need the available HP to tank the 750+ damage AFTER damage reduction of 75%. As people have said above. Prioritise life, get more life, when you think you have enough, get even more life. With the example someone gave above of needing 5000 armour. Meh. Pop a granite and wear armour with +HP. You'll easily reach that. Not that it'll do anything for you :P MORE LIFE When you start hitting 35k-40k armour, then it's doing something against the OHKOs damage spikes, but you STILL NEED THE HEALTH TO TAKE THE OTHER 25% of the spastic damage. PS: 3.5k life will get you killed with 2.5k armour against Cole smash (which is PRE maps). |
