Ben's Gem System
Hi,
I wanted to add my opinion of the current Gem System as well. I don't like it currently, It's not even near as exciting as in POE. It's actually not exciting at all ...when I really think about it ?! It's unflexible, uncreative, but most importantly it's boring. I disagree with Ben's Statement that the Gem System is bad in the Campaign in POE1 because I like it to be complicated, and I like it because it just feels fantastic even to get your first 4 Link. I think Orbs of Fusing being removed and also the coloring being removed just makes it unexciting. Do you remember how you did get your first 4 Link ? Do you remember how you did feel getting your first 6 Link ? It's one of the fundamental feelings POE1 generates what will bind you forever to that game and completely fell in love with it right ? POE2 removed of all of that. Also, I don't like that I don't have/or can level up my Gems I somehow miss it to spam click my right screen full of Plus Signs and with every single click I'm feeling like my character is improving a bit. Moreover, the feeling to level up your Enlighten you need to use your brain and invest in some Mechanics to really level up that Gem in a useful manner and timeframe ... and then you corrupt it, and you get fucking kicked out of your Chair when it really gets one additional level. POE2 has nothing of that. The thing I hate most is that support Gems don't have Quality and don't have levels in POE2, it makes it completely meaningless. Just to recap.... The fundamental Gem System was completely destroyed in POE2 and is useless and boring ... this will not be good for the long term Health of the Game. I don't think this will and can be fixed by adding more Support Gems (as Quinn said). Regards Daniel Last bumped on Jan 29, 2025, 6:52:26 AM

The audience for poe2 is blizzard consumers and rmters: lazy people. Obviously they don't like poe1 gem system. Imagine being a dev and you keep the red/blue/green colour system but you remove the reason (coloured sockets on gear).

I'm super happy for gem system in PoE 2. At least I can change my gear without worrying that I ruin my skills. Original system was creative and interesting but I'm glad they removed it.

Gem system makes a lot of sense for campaign.
PoE1 campaign sucks for me *precisely* because of the gem system But endgame? Yeah once you have enough chromatics to colour your sockets PoE1 gem system is superior especially since the 6 link omen/ currency exchange |

I'd class both of them as untidy, poe1s is like an old game (which it is I guess now) where the player is given the bare minimum but it still works so once people get over the initial hurdle they don't really care.
PoE2's is better implemented and a bit cleaner overall, but its still messy and has plenty of room to be reorganised and streamlined to make it more straightforward for players to engage with. for example, why are support gems even a thing? Not the modifiers themselves I mean the gems specifically that we have to cut. They are common as dirt what is the point? they may as well just let you choose a modifier for each socket on a skill as that is fundamentally how it plays after your very first character right at the start of the game and even then it feels like a punishment to experiment as a result. Basically the reasons behind it produce negative or neutral results, so why have it? In PoE1 empower/enlighten/enhance are all very rare so have value you in not being automatically available and in ruthless (much as i dislike it) supports can be exciting because they can't be bought. Template gems offer none of that, its a completely redundant system. |

" The linking/coloring of gem sockets was one of the most annoying bullshit in PoE, especially if you had to "off-colour" the sockets. The system in PoE 2 is WAY better, but could still be improved, e. g. support gems shouldn't have colors at all, because why the hell does an infernalist have to be buff, just because you want to improve fire spells? It makes no effing sense. |
