Support Gem Progression Ideas

As I continue to play the EA there are a few things that are bothersome about support gems:

1. Support gems cannot have quality
2. Support gems cannot gain levels
3. In essence support gems are stagnant. Once you've obtained one there's no need to do anything else with it.

From what I've seen, it seems that support gems are in need of something to give it chase, at the very least a small bit.

Do you think they should have something to give them chase?
What are your thoughts on how to give supports progression?
