[Global Illumination] Why it's hard to see...

I've been wondering why it's so hard to see certain things. I believe global illumination is the issue.

I've been a graphics designer w/ a niche of color grading for 20 years. One of the practices is to grayscale to check the illumination (foreground, subject, background).

The circled bits compare the illumination with it on (Lighting-> Shadows + Global Illumination) and off.

You can see with it on it causes multiple objects and effects to blur into the same gray. My opinion is the global lighting is a bit too low on the y-axis causing "too much" shadow. Imo the game also looks much better without it.
