Simulacrum Portal during waves

Why is the portal even there whilst during the waves??? Make it pop up after the wave is cleared. While I am killing monsters and dodging and running, I click on the portal, lose all my power charges, go back in and get absolutely fried instantly. Died on wave 14 because of that
