Terrain Gaps and Ranged or AoE Attacks

Can anyone explain why, when there are gaps in the Terrain e.g. Creeks, canals etc., that player Ranged AOE will not pass over the gap but enermy ranged or AOE will?

I am playing Spark Sorc and Cold Monk. Have not yet played Ranger or other ranged classes, so please take that into account.
