Removal of Unidentified Items, Unique Item Personality, and Tier Order
Why not just remove the mechanic of having to identify items? Personally, I like it, but identifying every single item is tedious and unnecessary.
Why not leave identification solely for unique items? Normal items could have less personality—at least, that’s my opinion. If they removed this mechanic, they could also allow us to better customize filters so that we only see items on the ground with attributes relevant to us, instead of a bunch of things that make no sense. I think this would make things more dynamic. Players wouldn’t waste as much time, and giving more personality to unique items would make dropping something unique truly exciting, with the anticipation of getting the best possible rolls. Speaking of rolls, what sense does it make for them to be inverted in POE2? Why isn’t Tier 1 simply the best? This way, players would immediately know if they’re dealing with the highest possible tier of an attribute, without needing to consult external sites like databases and similar resources. (heads up you can ID all with the spectre guy)
The reason from a game design persepective for ID'ing is for that moment where you wonder if the rare base you desire might have rolled well. its literally a second dopamine hit. The first: "oh my base and its a rare/blue lets pick that up" and then the second: "oh I wonder if it has good rolls lets id it". Drop it id'd and you eliminate that second dopamine hit. But honestly the best reason to keep this in POE2 is that D4 items drop identified and that contributes to the loot in that game feeling light weight and complete dogshit. Less like D4 = better. Like I know this gets old saying D4 bad, its pretty reasonable to consider it a perfect model of what not to do. Pandering to players who don't want consequences for their mistakes is a perfect description of what went fundamentally wrong with D3 and 4. If they wanted mindless mobile game time waster gameplay they sure did make some perplexing choices and marketing statements for 6 fucking years. I agree that there’s a really cool dopamine rush in it, but I don’t see any reason for all items needing to be identified—it’s a complete waste of time...
If at least blue items dropped already identified, it would be a bit better, as we could just hover over them and immediately tell if they’re a good base or not. From rare items and above, it would make sense to require identification 100%. Diablo 4 has items already identified, but the game itself doesn’t even have a filter, so it’s a complete waste of time and shows a lack of appreciation for this feature. | |
