Crit Sorc + Mana Flare

Hi,
Anyone tried a mana flare build using lot of crit chances ?
Hoes this support gem add a real dps in end game ?
Since no dps is added to skill in description, I don't get the benefit of this gem, but it looks fun ^^

I have in mind to create a build based on crit, and maybe cast on crit.

It is ineffective for clearing and single target for 1 reason: the mana cost and cooldown (1 second). That means you can't use it for clearing effectively since it has a 1 second cooldown and triggers on only 1 enemy at a time. It also lacks AOE. In a single target situation, it could be effective. But be careful if you're playing Mind over Matter.
No issue with "Mind Over Matter" when I want to maximise Mana Flare damage.
But the 1s cooldown get me ^^
Also since it cannot trigger on multiple targets, it reduce its effectiveness.

It was my plan to build around mana flare with fireball. Then I realize that fireball is not really designed to be played with mana flare, but mostly with wildshards.
But its still okay cause fireball is doing an AoE radius explosion on crit. But im pretty sure if you want to play around mana flare, comet is the best skill.


To maximize mana flare, you need to have a lot of mana (4-5k) but even like this mana flare dont really destroy packs of mobs. Cause of the CD to proc. Cause its pretty hard to reach a good AoE (3m or more). And cause mana flare dont add that much to your dps.
I did it on low lvl map and its okay to clean pack, its good against rare but against boss its pretty bad.
I had 35% chance of crit and +400% crit dmg to have an idea.

And to have an idea of the dps, when mana flare proc, its a +50% more dmg when you are on low lvl maps, but its just +30 more dmg when you reach end game (cause your skill dmg sky rocket (with fireball, comet,...), when your mana dont).
So yeah you have the feeling its really efeective cause you crit but its not really that good.
I really prefer to play with archmage for more dmg (+1200 dmg when I have +600 with mana flare right now) and I cant play it anymore while playing with MoM, EB and CI.


if I theorycraft it, mana flare should be played as stormweaver (arcane surge is so important) and for crit chance.
Then you prefer a huge dmg skill with AoE, with a good crit chance (11% is good enough I think).
Then you would need a lot of Area of effect to trigger it on multiple targets at the same time. I reached 3m of radius for fireball to have an idea, and it was not enough...

But imo, right now, its too bad. You have to invest so much on mana and crit chance and dmg, for just be able to kill rares monstres on T10 map...

I think the cooldown applies to multiple spell casts, not multiple instances of damage from one cast.

So it should work with like multiple hits of spark and shit.

I'm also pretty sure, then when you DO crit, you crit ON THE SPELL, not multiple chance for projectile.

Like if u cast spark, and it crits, they either ALL crit or none do.
I can say no to that and Im pretty sure its not the case.

I tried mana flare with both ember and fireball, and with ember it just crit once, and with fireball + wildshards it sometimes crit twice (on hit then with a rebound).

Thats why its so bad. But if GGG nerf archmage (should be the case) and if they upgrade mana flare, maybe it should be playable...
