Do items dropped by bosses disappear if you die after the boss is killed?

I just beat a boss in Act 1. I was full health, but trapped in a bone wall during the final strike. The boss had released some attack just immediately prior to dying that then took me out completely. I saw the boss's death animation and it dropped great loot, including a unique crossbow (I am playing mercenary).


Again, I was full health. I really had no way of dodging the attack at this point. If that loot is truly gone, I think I am done with this game for good and will not be playing any further nor at full release. It is such an unnecessary game mechanic. The boss was dead. It was essentially RNG that I was trapped after/immediately during the boss dying.
