Same Skill, Different Hotkey But Different Weapon Sets Disables Gem Permanently

I want to use a skill, The same skill on left click as right click but have it do something different on right click associated with 2nd weapon set and passives allocated towards it..

If I Assign Left click to use weapon set ONLY 1, & Right click to weapon ONLY set 2..

this will unassign the skill from both Left and right click my, hotbar and will no longer be able to produce a thumbnail from this specific gem

I had to cut a new gem of the same skill re assign the actions and then switch back to my original gem

am i doing something wrong and this was some sort of intended function?

You can't assign a single skill gem different hotkeys for different weapon sets. Either the skill works for both sets, for one weapon set, or it's disabled. The weapon set setting is not specific to hotkey assignments.

What you can do is have it active for both weapon sets, and use X to swap the active weapon yourself.

I don't know why you'd have to do this? Maybe I'm not understanding the UI you're seeing there.

You don't need to have an action assigned to the skill bar to change its weapon set setting. You just need to click the arrow next to the DPS/DMG display in the skill panel.

A second skill gem would be necessary to have different hotkey assignments for the different weapon sets, but shouldn't be necessary to make the original gem assignable again.
