After adding a gem socket to Skeleton Sniper I can no longer use it

I was using a level 8 Skeletal Sniper with 2 supports

I cut a new level 9 gem and replaced it, while using a jewellers orb to add another socket to it.
Even without any supports or changes, I can't summon any minions from this new gem. When I try to add more minions I get a red exclamation mark.

Replacing with it the original level 8 gem works fine

Check your spirit usage. The Support gem may have pushed the spirit cost over your spirit.

Same issue even with no support gems

I cut a new level 9 Gem, and added the extra socket and this one works fine, but the first one I did is still bugged.
