whats the point with the gemcutter prism

I have 100 hours in and only 2 gemcutter prism drops to show for it.
I cant use these drops as i lose them on my next gem upgrade so whats the point of these awesome items being absolutely useless.

Do i need to wait until i hit the max gem before using these things.
Please beef up the drop rate GGG otherwise they will remain top tier use only and the general masses wont use them until end game.

You can use them on any level gem, they won't be list when you upgrade the gem.
