Orb of chance not working?

So I'm fairly new to PoE in general. However I recently crafted an orb if chance. The text says turn a normal item into unique or destroy it. It was my understanding your can help manipulate the roll depending on what you use it on. Example being for me I'm trying to get Blueflame gloves. So I found normal gloves with the both armor and energy sheild but it said I can't upgrade this item. Any idea why?
