Ritual Altars size and placement

It seems that altar area is much smaller than in POE 1, and a lot of the placements of the alter itself, it is next to a cliff, waterway, trees, rocks, this cuts into the decreased size of the altar area. Didn't in POE1 you modified the placement of the alters?
